ANNAPOLIS, Md.-- As the nation continues to mourn for victims of Tuesday's attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the United States Naval Academy has cancelled all intercollegiate and club sports, as well as all extracurricular activities through Sunday, it was announced Thursday by Superintendent Vice Admiral, John R. Ryan, USN.
Twelve of Navy's intercollegiate athletic teams were scheduled to compete over the course of the weekend, including the football team, which was scheduled to play at Northwestern Saturday. That game has been cancelled and will not be made up.
In addition to the football squad, Navy's men's and women's soccer teams, men's cross country, women's volleyball, intercollegiate and offshore sailing, water polo and heavyweight, lightweight and women's crew teams were to be in action this weekend.
"We will try and make up as many of the events as possible," said interim Director of Athletics, Capt. Kevin Sinnett, USNR. "Right now the Brigade's thoughts and prayers are centered on the victims of Tuesday's senseless attack."
Navy's intercollegiate athletic teams are not scheduled to return to action until next Wednesday, when the women's soccer team plays host to American at 7 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
