Don Vaughan, who has coached Colgate University's men's ice hockey team for the past 11 seasons, will serve as interim director of the Division of Physical Education, Recreation, and Athletics for this school year. The university's dean of faculty and provost, Jack Dovidio, made the announcement today.

Associate Men's Ice Hockey Coach Stan Moore will serve as interim head coach of men's hockey for the 2003/2004 season. Senior Associate Director of Athletics Janet Little, who replaced departed Athletic Director Mark Murphy for the summer, will take on the added assignment of coordinating strategic planning for the division this year.

"We are grateful to Don for stepping in to serve the university in this way, and we deeply appreciate the outstanding job Janet has done over the past several months," said Dovidio. "We also appreciate the hard work and diligence of the search committee. As the search progressed, it became clear that Colgate would be best served by appointing Don as interim director for a year, and we are delighted that he has accepted."

President Rebecca Chopp said, "This is a good decision for Colgate and I look forward to working with Don through the coming year as he leads an important division. I also credit Janet for her reassuring guidance of the division and her wise counsel over the past months."

Vaughan said," I believe in Colgate and in the direction we are headed. I am grateful for the trust of President Chopp, Dean Dovidio, and my colleagues in the division, and I am excited about this opportunity."

Vaughan coached as assistant at his alma mater St. Lawrence University (bachelors and masters degrees) and at Cornell University for seven years prior to coming to Colgate as head coach in 1992. His Colgate teams have recorded 179 victories, 172 losses and 33 ties, advancing to the ECAC playoffs ten times, and to the NCAA east regional playoff in 1999/2000. Vaughan's players found success at Colgate on the ice and in the classroom.

Nearly 100% of the players he recruited have completed their eligibility and earned degrees, contributing to the University's record as a national leader in graduating athletes. Vaughan was ECAC Coach of the Year in 1999/2000, and he has twice won the Hartman Coaching Award (1995 and 2000) given to the Colgate coach displaying leadership, spirit and dedication.

Moore has been with the Colgate hockey program throughout Vaughan's tenure, except for two years coaching the Division I program at Union College from 1996-1998. Moore was the ECAC Coach of the Year in 1996/1997. He has also coached at Division I Providence College and Brown University, and at Division III Brockport and Potsdam. Moore and Vaughan were teammates for a season on the Enschede Lions of the Netherlands professional hockey league.

Colgate's Division of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics oversees a Division I intercollegiate program with 25 men's and women's teams; 21 compete in the Patriot League, men's and women's ice hockey compete in the ECAC, and men's and women's rowing compete independently. The division also provides instruction in physical education, as well as an extensive program of intramural, club and recreational sports, and an active program of outdoor education.
