Colgate University's Director of Sports Medicine Marty Erb has been named the recipent of The Thomas J. Sheehan Sr. Award, presented by the New York State Athletic Trainer's Association to the athletic trainer whose character, commitment and achievements in the athletic training profession clearly exemplify the traits of Thomas J. Sheehan, Sr.

He will be given the award at the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association meeting at the Marriott Copley in Boston on January 5.

Erb is in his 30th year at Colgate, and 28th in the position of Director of Sports Medicine. He is administratively responsible for the sports medicine coverage of the intercollegiate program, as well as the supervision of a six member professional staff and 15 student athletic trainers. Erb has specific responsibilities with football, track & field and men's crew.

A native of Huntingdon Valley, PA., he is a 1972 graduate of Bucknell University with a degree in Biology. Erb was awarded the Master's Degree in Physical Education from Indiana University the following year.

He is a former President of the New York State Athletic Trainers' Association, and currently serves as Chair of the NYSATA Hall of Fame Committee. He has spearheaded a successful effort to have athletic trainers recognized statewide by getting legislation passed to designate Athletic Trainer Week in New York. He is currently serving an appointment as a member of the New York State Department of Education Committee on Athletic Trainers.

Erb is a past recipient of the Maroon Council Award (alumni award for distinguished service) and Hamilton High School "Booster of the Year" award. This past fall he was honored as "Outstanding Athletic Trainer of 2001" by the All-American Football Foundation.
