Bucknell took the early lead, but American and Lehigh are challenging the Bison for the top position in the first Patriot League President's Cup standings of the 2001-02 academic year.
BU, which has won the Cup eight of the first 11 years of the Patriot League, won two championships among the seven fall sports on the way to compiling 37.0 points. The Bison captured the PL title in women's soccer and women's cross country and leads the women's Cup standings with 24.0 points. BU added a second-place finish in men's cross country to compile 13.0 points in the men's standings, which ties for third place with American and Holy Cross.
American, the newcomer to the Patriot League, is just two points behind Bucknell in both the women's and overall Cup standings. The Eagles took top honors in volleyball, men's soccer and finished among the top three in men's cross country, field hockey and women's soccer to score 35.0 overall points.
Lehigh is leading the men's Cup standings and is within 5.5 points of Bucknell in the overall Cup standings after winning the PL football title for the fourth-straight year. The Mountain Hawks also finished among the top three in women's cross country, men's soccer and volleyball.
Challenging Lehigh in the men's Cup standings is Colgate, which placed second in the final football standings and scored well in men's soccer and men's cross country.
In the overall Cup race, Holy Cross (26.5), Army (25.0) and Colgate (24.5) are all within striking distance of the leaders. HC won the field hockey and men's soccer regular-season titles, but lost points in their respective PL championship tournaments. Army was strong in both men's and women's cross country and have traditionally picked up points in the track & field seasons.
Lafayette finished the fall season with 20.5 points, including seven points for a second-place finish in the field hockey championship tournament. Navy competes in just three fall PL sports and compiled 16.0 points. The Mids' women's soccer team scored seven points by placing second in the women's soccer championship tournament while the men's soccer team added 5.5 points by advancing to the semifinals of the PL tournament.
President's Cup points are awarded based on a team's performance in the final PL standings. In football and cross country, the points are awarded on the final team standings. In field hockey, soccer and volleyball, points are awarded based on a combination of the League championship tournament (for top four teams) and regular-season standings (for those that do not qualify for the League championship tournament).
