American University's Department of Athletics has announced the Class of 2004 for the Stafford H. "Pop" Cassell Hall of Fame. Gary Cohen '75, Brian Gilgeous '93 and Dave Reinhart '73 will be inducted into the Hall during ceremonies held January 31, 2004, as part of the University's Hall of Fame Weekend. The announcement was made today by American University Associate Director of Athletics Athena Argyropoulos.
While the induction of the trio will highlight the weekend, it is only one part of a weekend-long celebration of American University athletics. On Friday, Jan. 30, there will be a men's and women's basketball doubleheader versus Lafayette.
On Saturday, the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. AU alumni and former basketball player Bill Stone '86 will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.
On Sunday at halftime of the men's game versus Army, the AU community and all present members of the Hall of Fame will again honor the three inductees' entrance into the Stafford H. "Pop" Cassell Hall of Fame.
Cohen was a great athlete who will be remembered as one of the elite track stars for American in the 1970's. He was named All-America by U.S. Track and Field. While a competitor he was a record-holder for the Indoor 3000-meter, Indoor 5000-meter, Outdoor 3000-meter, Outdoor 5000-meter and the Outdoor six-mile. He was the Middle Atlantic Conference Cross Country champion in 1973 and took every first place in AU's dual meet season in 1972.
Gilgeous is the second leading scorer in Eagles' men's basketball history with 2,013 points. His career in the Colonial Athletic Association began with an All-Rookie selection and finished with three First-Team All-CAA picks, as well as the 1993 CAA Player of the Year. He led the CAA in scoring in 1993 with 22.7 ppg. and was a 1993 ECAC Second Team All-Star. Gilgeous scored 30 or more points in six games during the 1992-93 season.
Gilgeous also holds several other distinctions, including seventh on all-time steal list (177), second on the all-time three-point percentage for a season (.441) and second all-time for career free throws made, 538. More than a scorer, Gilgeous is a member of the 500 rebound club, with 688 for his career.
Reinhart was named captain and MVP of the cross country team as a sophomore while leading the squad to the MAC Conference title and a 19th place finish in the NCAA Division I Championships in 1971. As a junior he was an Outdoor track finalist in NCAA Division I 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:59.44) and named Cross Country All-America by the U.S. Track and Field Federation ('72). Also in 1972, he won the mile run at the MAC Outdoor Championships with a 15-year meet record and 28-year AU school record time of 4:07.50. As a senior he won the MAC Outdoor Track Championship in the steeplechase with a meet record time.
American University fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women's sports and nine for men, and has entered its third year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the Patriot League, AU has captured league championships in men's cross country, women's cross country, field hockey, women's lacrosse, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's volleyball, and a regular-season title in men's basketball.
