Ryan Sakamoto joined the Patriot League as Assistant Commissioner for Communications in August 2016. He joined the League staff after spending more than eight years in the sports information department at Georgetown University.
Sakamoto oversees the coordination, production and dissemination of Patriot League information, while serving as the league’s primary contact for football, men’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, baseball, field hockey, cross country, track and field and golf. In his role he also coordinates content for the Patriot League website (patriotleague.com) and social media accounts.
At Georgetown, Sakamoto served as the sports information contact for the Patriot League member football program since 2010, working closely with Head Coaches Kevin Kelly and Rob Sgarlata. In addition to football, he most recently worked with the Hoya men’s lacrosse, swimming & diving and men’s golf programs, while also providing the play-by-play voice for women’s basketball and women’s lacrosse broadcasts on the BIG EAST Digital Network. He had also spent time as the primary contact for field hockey, men’s and women’s rowing, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and volleyball during his time at Georgetown.
Sakamoto began his career in the sports industry in 2003 with the Bowie Baysox, a Class Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, before spending two seasons (2004-2006) as the Director of Public Relations for the Frederick Keys, a Class Single-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. He has spent the past seven seasons working as the Baysox onfield emcee. He also spent time in print media, working in the sports department with The Morning Call (1999-2001) and The Washington Post (2001-2002) and as a contributor to The Frederick News-Post (2005-2007).
An Easton, Pa. native, Sakamoto graduated from University of Maryland – College Park in 2004 with a B.A. in communication studies with a concentration in government and politics. In 2012 he completed his M.P.S in sports industry management at Georgetown University. In the community, Sakamoto has been an active volunteer with Special Olympics D.C., volunteering as a player and referee for SODC’s Unified Basketball League since 2011.
