Army Places 79 On Patriot League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll

July 6, 2004

CENTER VALLEY, PA. - A total of 79 Army student-athletes were named to the 2004 Patriot League Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll it was announced last week by league president Carolyn Schlie Femovich. In all, 824 Patriot League student-athletes from the eight member schools were named to the Winter/Spring academic honor roll.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the league's six winter or nine spring championship sports. Bucknell led the way with 196 candidates for the winter/spring season.

Sixteen newly commissioned second lieutenants were among the Army honorees. Included in that group was Charlie Lewis, a member of the Black Knights' men's swimming & diving team, who earned a perfect 4.00 GPA for the spring semester. Lewis is one of 35 Patriot League honor roll candidates to attain a 4.00 GPA this past semester. The Geography major was one of four on the men's swimming & diving team.

The men's and women's track & field squads led the way with 18 and 14 student-athletes, respectively. The women's swimming & diving team was the only other Black Knight program to reach double figures with 10 representatives on the winter/spring honor roll.

Army's junior class posted the most representation with 27 honor roll students among the 12 winter/spring sports that are contested at the Academy. Baseball's catcher Schuyler Williamson, the league's "Scholar-Athlete of the Year" on the diamond, was included in that class. The plebes placed second with 19 members, while the sophomores registered 17 candidates.
