Center Valley, Pa. - Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich announced Friday the hiring of Jimmy Johnson as Patriot League Media and External Relations Assistant.
"I am very pleased to welcome Jimmy to the Patriot League staff," Femovich said. "He brings valuable experience to the position and will play an integral role in our new media initiatives as well as our entire media and external relations effort and administration of League championships."
"I am very excited to join the Patriot League," Johnson said. "I believe that the League is at the forefront of new media and I look forward to this great learning experience. Working with a great staff and eight prestigious institutions in the Patriot League will surely prepare me for the next step in my career."
Johnson will serve as the main media relations contact for 13 Patriot League sports, including field hockey, volleyball, women's lacrosse, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track, men's and women's swimming and diving and men's and women's tennis. He will also provide assistance for men and women's basketball coverage, the League website and championship administration as well as multimedia efforts.
Johnson comes to the Patriot League from Kutztown (Pa.) University, where he worked as the graduate assistant in the sports information office while receiving his Masters degree in Electronic Media. While at Kutztown, Johnson assisted with media guides, game coverage, press releases and website content, and created a weekly video Webcast entitled "Golden Bear Weekly." He served as the interim sports information director for his final three months.
Johnson also has experience in the newspaper field. He was the sports editor for the Lewistown (Pa.) Sentinel from August 2005 to March 2007, running the day-to-day operations of the sports department of a six-day, 14,000-circulation paper. He expanded a four-page section into a six and seven-page section while covering Penn State football and Super Bowl XL. He won the Pennsylvania Associated Press Managing Editor's award for best sports column. Johnson works as a stringer for the Reading (Pa.) Eagle and has also written for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
A 2005 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Johnson received a bachelor's degree in Media Communications and Administration of Justice. While at Pittsburgh, he wrote for The Pitt News and was a stringer for Sports Illustrated on Campus, while also completing an internship with Fox SportsNet Pittsburgh.
