Patriot League Presidents' Cup Standings
Center Valley, Pa. - Despite a pair of championships for both Lehigh and Navy, Bucknell extended its lead in the overall as well as the men and women's Patriot League Presidents' Cup standings through the winter.
The Bison earned 35 points in the winter sports, giving them 73 for the 2009-10 season to date. That puts Bucknell eight points ahead of second-place Lehigh in the overall standings, as the Mountain Hawks have 65 points overall and totaled 34.75 in the winter. Navy was the big winter winner, rising from last place in the overall standings all the way to third by leading all schools with 38.25 points for the season to total 61 for the year. Filling out the overall standings are American (57.25), Colgate (52), Army (50), Lafayette (43) and Holy Cross (40.5).
Bucknell widened its lead over Lehigh in the men's standings, as the Bison place first with 34.75 points and the Mountain Hawks follow with 32. Navy is next with 27.5, followed by American (25.75), Lafayette (24.25), Army (20.75) and Colgate and Holy Cross each with 19.75.
In the women's standings, the Bison have opened nearly a five-point lead on the field. Bucknell stands in first place with 38.25 points, and is followed by a closely packed bunch in the next four slots with Navy (33.5), Lehigh (33), Colgate (32.25) and American (31.5) separated by just two points. Completing the women's standings are Army (29.25), Holy Cross (20.75) and Lafayette (18.75).
The Patriot League sponsors six sports during the winter season, with men and women's basketball, men and women's swimming and diving and men and women's indoor track and field. Each Patriot League member participates in all six of the winter sports.
The Bison earned the Patriot League Championship in Women's Indoor Track and Field, and boasted a strong overall performance by finishing second in Men's Indoor Track and Field and both Men and Women's Swimming and Diving. That allowed Bucknell to keep its distance from hard-charging Lehigh and Navy. The Mountain Hawks won both the regular-season and Tournament Championship in men's basketball, and claimed a share of the regular-season crown and the Tournament Championship in women's basketball. Navy finished in first place in both the Men and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The remaining title went to Army, which finished first in Men's Indoor Track and Field.
Patriot League Presidents' Cup points are awarded based on a team's performance in the regular season and postseason Patriot League standings. In cross country, football, golf, rowing, swimming and diving and track and field, the points are awarded on the final team standing at the Championship. There are 10 sports remaining for the 2009-10 season that will be decided in the spring.
Bucknell took home its 15th Patriot League Presidents' Cup at the conclusion of the 2008-09 year. Army is the only other team in League history to win the cup, taking home four trophies (1994, 1995, 1997, 2005). Bucknell also claimed its 15th women's title last season, while Army won its first trophy of any kind since 2004-05 by taking the title on the men's side.
