Center Valley, Pa. -- Army's Andrew Maisano and Navy's Alex Buck and Joe Lennon were named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Men's Academic All-America Team for at-large sports, it was announced Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA). Maisano and Buck earned spots on the first team, while Lennon appeared on the third team. The voting was conducted on a nationwide basis, with all first-team members from the All-District teams announced on May 20 appearing on the national ballot.
A senior, Maisano's award as a first-team Academic All-America marks the second straight year in which an Army lacrosse player has earned the distinction, as Scott Rosenshein was similarly cited last year following his senior campaign. It's another prestigious award for Maisano, who was named the Patriot League's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's lacrosse in April and won the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award last month. A two-year starter at midfield, he started all 17 games for the Black Knights this season, scoring three goals and adding five assists for eight points and helping the team reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament after an upset of two-time defending national champion Syracuse in the first round. He carried a 4.00 grade-point average while majoring in systems engineering. Upon graduating 26th in his class from the U.S. Military Academy last month, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
A junior on the men's swimming and diving team at Navy, Buck carried a 4.00 cumulative GPA while majoring in aerospace engineering. He had a stellar freshman campaign that led him to be named the League's Rookie of the Year in 2008 and first-team All-Patriot League honors. This season, he finished at least second in 10 of his 13 races in the 50-yard freestyle, while picking up second-team All-League distinction at this year's League Championships. The team finished with a 13-1 mark and captured its seventh consecutive League title.
Lennon started 43 of 48 games for Navy's men's lacrosse team during his four-year career. He was an honors economics major with a 3.73 cumulative GPA and graduated 109th in Academic Order of Merit from the Naval Academy last month. He was the team's fourth-leading scorer with 24 points (17g, 7a) and picked up eight ground balls and caused two turnovers playing midfield for the Midshipmen. A two-time member of the League's Academic Honor Roll, Lennon earned Second-Team All-Patriot League accolades in his junior and senior seasons. He scored four goals and netted three assists during Navy's successful run through the 2009 Patriot League Tournament to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team and tallied a goal in the Mids' NCAA Tournament contest against Duke last year.
One student-athlete from a League school was cited in a non-League sport. Army's Jay Clark, a goaltender on the men's ice hockey team, was honored as a third-team Academic All-America.
To be eligible for Academic All-America recognition, student-athletes must have been named First Team Academic All-District. To be considered for that award, student-athletes must have achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30, be at least a sophomore academically and be a starter or key player on their respective team. The sports that make up the at-large list include women's bowling, women's crew, fencing, women's field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, men's volleyball, water polo and men's wrestling.
