Patriot League Weekly Awards

Center Valley, Pa. -- The Patriot League announced its weekly awards for Sept. 20-26 in field hockey, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball and cross country Monday.

In field hockey, American went 2-0 with wins over Temple and St. Joseph's. Christine Fingerhuth was named the Offensive Player of the Week award and Gina Hofmann was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Bucknell's Sarah Zargarpour was selected as the Goalkeeper of the Week and teammate Rachel Misko was named the Rookie of the Week.

As Patriot League play opened in men's soccer, Lafayette and Navy picked up shutout wins to start the League season 1-0. Lafayette's Kyle Scharfenberg was named the Offensive Player of the Week and teammate Jeff McLaughlin was named the Rookie of the Week. Navy's Alex Foskett earned the Defensive Player of the Week award for his efforts in a 1-0 shutout win over Army, and American's Matt Makowski was named the Goalkeeper of the Week for his performance in a 3-1 win over defending champ Bucknell.

Lehigh nabbed three of the four awards in women's soccer as Jana Basubas was named the Defensive Player of the Week, Lauren Mains was tabbed the Goalkeeper of the Week and Murphee Greeley was selected as the Rookie of the Week. Navy's Carissa Youker won the Offensive Player of the Week award.

American women's volleyball had another perfect week, going 3-0, including a 2-0 mark in League play. The Eagles were led by Magdalena Tekiel, who was named the Player of the Week. Lehigh's Courtney McCutchan was selected as the Rookie of the Week.

In cross country, Andrew Hanko won his third straight Male Runner of the Week award during a light weekend of competition as teams prepare for the Paul Short Run Friday. Navy's Hanko placed ninth out of 213 runners to win the Runner of the Week award, while Lehigh freshman Jimmy Miller won the Rookie Runner of the Week. Lafayette's Margaret Bruno-Metzger and Rose Willey won the Female Runner and Rookie Runner of the Week awards. Six of eight Patriot League schools will travel to the Lehigh Valley for the Paul Short Run Friday.

Patriot League Field Hockey Weekly Awards

Offensive Player of the Week
CHRISTINE FINGERHUTH, AMERICAN Sr., F, Santiago, Chile

Fingerhuth tallied a goal in each American contest over the weekend as the Eagles ran their winning streak to six games with victories over Temple and St. Joseph's in Philadelphia. She put American up 2-1 early in the second half of an eventual 4-2 win against the Owls on Saturday and scored the final goal via a penalty stroke in the 5-0 victory over the Hawks Sunday. Fingerhuth leads all active Patriot League players with 38 goals and 87 points, with each mark giving her a spot in the American top 10. Fingerhuth earns her first Offensive Player of the Week award of the season and the second of her career.

Defensive Player of the Week
GINA HOFMANN, AMERICAN So., D, Braunschweig, Germany

Hofmann earns her second Defensive Player of the Week award and the fourth in five weeks for an Eagle defender, after two outstanding performances in victories over Temple and St. Joseph's. She tallied a goal and an assist in the 4-2 win over the Owls Saturday and added two assists in the 5-0 blanking of the Hawks on Sunday. She also spearheaded another spectacular defensive weekend for the Eagles, who allowed just seven shots overall and four on goal in the two games while limiting their opponents to a combined eight penalty corners.

Goalkeeper of the Week
SARAH ZARGARPOUR, BUCKNELL Jr., GK, North Vancouver, British Columbia

Zargarpour receives the Goalkeeper of the Week honor for the second time in the past three weeks after allowing just one goal in 165 minutes of Bucknell's two games over the weekend. She played the first half and overtime of a 4-3 stroke-off win over Sacred Heart on Saturday, stopping all four shots she faced and keeping the Pioneers from a successful stroke as the Bison won the round 3-0. The next day, Zargarpour made a career-high 10 saves to keep the Bison close in an eventual 2-1 stroke-off loss to Indiana. She posted a .933 save percentage and 0.42 goals against average for the weekend.

Rookie of the Week
RACHEL MISKO, BUCKNELL Fr., M, Morristown, N.J.

Misko scored a goal in each of Bucknell's games over the weekend to pull into a tie for the team lead and fifth place in the Patriot League with four goals for the season. She gave the Bison a 3-2 lead in the second half of an eventual 4-3 stroke-off win against Sacred Heart, and tallied the team's only goal in a 2-1 stroke-off loss against Indiana. Misko earns the Patriot League Rookie of the Week award for the first time.

MADISON INGAL, LEHIGH Jr., M, Basking Ridge, N.J.
Ingal scored a pair of goals in Lehigh's 4-0 victory over Siena Wednesday, including the game-winner.

SHELLY MONTGOMERY, AMERICAN Fr., M, Fairfax, Va.
Montgomery scored twice, including the game-winner, in American's 5-0 triumph at St. Joseph's Sunday.

JESSICA MILLER, LEHIGH Sr., GK, Lititz, Pa.
Miller recorded a shutout with four saves Wednesday against Siena, and made eight saves in a 3-2 loss at La Salle on Saturday.

Patriot League Men's Soccer Weekly Awards

BRINE Offensive Player of the Week
KYLE SCHARFENBERG, LAFAYETTE So., F, Sylvania, Ohio
The Ohio native scored two goals, including the game's first and eventual game-winning tally in Lafayette's 3-0 victory over Holy Cross. His first of the match came in the 27th minute, and he added an insurance goal in the 84th to seal the win and cap off the scoring. It was the first two-goal came of his career and the first for a Leopard in League play since Nov. 3, 2007, when Scott Hawkins scored twice versus Navy.

BRINE Defensive Player of the Week
ALEX FOSKETT, NAVY Sr., D, Manassas, Va.
Foskett led Navy's defensive effort in its Star Game victory over Army. He played all 90 minutes of the contest, and the Midshipmen back line held the Black Knights without a shot for the first 38 minutes of the contest and surrendered only one shot on goal for the entire match. As a team, Navy has allowed just three goals in its first six contests.

BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week
MATT MAKOWSKI, AMERICAN Jr., GK, Quakertown, Pa.
Makowski faced 24 shots and made a season-best eight saves as the Eagles upended defending champion Bucknell 3-1 in a rematch of last year's Patriot League championship game. He made a key save in the match's 78th minute, stopping a Josh Plump shot from 10 yards out to preserve the lead for American. For the week, Makowski tallied a .769 save percentage while stopping 10 shots and accumulating a 1-1 record. The loss came to No. 7 Virginia.

BRINE Rookie of the Week
JEFF McLAUGHLIN, LAFAYETTE Fr., F, Harding, N.J.
McLaughlin made the most of his first career start for the Leopards, tallying an assist on the eventual game-winning goal in the 27th minute of Lafayette's 3-0 shutout of Holy Cross in the Patriot League opener for both teams. He also recorded two shots during the game and is tied for fourth on the team with nine. McLaughlin has played in all eight of the Leopards' contests so far this season during his rookie campaign.

CRISTOBAL SOTO, AMERICAN Fr., D, Santiago, Chile
Soto scored a goal against Bucknell and contributed a defensive save last week in the Eagles' contest against nationally-ranked Virginia.

MICHAEL RAKOCZY, NAVY So., M, Cincinnati, Ohio
Rakoczy scored Navy's only goal in its 1-0 victory over Army, earning him a spot on the CollegeSoccerNews.com Team of the Week.

ANDREW PIANKO, LAFAYETTE Sr., GK, Indianapolis, Ind.
Pianko posted four saves in the Leopards' 3-0 blanking of Holy Cross for his second shutout of the season.

Patriot League Women's Soccer Weekly Awards

BRINE Offensive Player of the Week
CARISSA YOUKER, NAVY Sr., F, Potomac, Md.
Youker had a hand in four of Navy's six goals during a 2-0 week for the Midshipmen. She tallied an assist in the team's 3-2 victory over Duquesne, then scored the game-winner in the 75th minute and logged a pair of assists as the Mids defeated Penn by the same 3-2 score Sunday. She has five goals and 13 points to lead Navy, while her 13 career game-winning goals are tied for second all-time at the Naval Academy.

BRINE Defensive Player of the Week
JANA BASUBAS, LEHIGH Jr., M, Canyon Lake, Calif.
Basubas excelled at defensive midfield for the Mountain Hawks as they posted a 1-0-1 week. With Lehigh leading 2-1 in the second half, she spearheaded her team's defensive efforts, allowing just one Explorer shot over the match's final 15 minutes to help preserve the eventual 3-1 win. She netted her first goal of the season in Sunday's match at Columbia, ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Mid-Atlantic regional poll, in the 78th minute to force the 1-1 tie.

BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week
LAUREN MAINS, LEHIGH Sr., GK, Scotch Plains, N.J.
Mains captured her second weekly award of the season after posting a 1-0-1 record and playing all 200 minutes for the Mountain Hawks during the week. She posted six saves in the team's 3-1 win over La Salle and made five stops in Lehigh's 1-1 tie at regionally-ranked Columbia. For the week, she posted a 0.90 goals-against average and a .846 save percentage while logging 11 total saves.

BRINE Rookie of the Week
MURPHEE GREELEY, LEHIGH Fr., F, Devon, Pa.
Lehigh scored four goals during the week and Greeley had a hand in three of them. She tallied a goal and assist in the Mountain Hawks' 3-1 win over La Salle, then added an assist on Jana Basubas' game-tying goal against Columbia. She posted a season-best nine shots against La Salle, with five of them coming on goal. She has team-highs in assists (four) and points (10) while sitting tied for second in goals (three).

FREIDERIKE ENGEL, AMERICAN Sr., D, Hamburg, Germany
Engel was solid defensively against Vermont, including posting a crucial shot block in the 85th minute of American's 2-1 win over the Catamounts.

PALOMA PEREZ, NAVY Fr., F, Bossier City, La.
Perez tallied the game-winning goal in the ninth minute of the first overtime to give Navy a 3-2 win over Duquesne.

SHELBY STAND, HOLY CROSS Sr., F, Douglas, Mass.
Stand posted a three point week, scoring the Crusaders' only goal in a 2-1 loss to undefeated Siena while picking up an assist in her team's 2-1 overtime victory against Rider.

Patriot League Women's Volleyball Weekly Awards

Player of the Week
MAGDALENA TEKIEL, AMERICAN Sr., OH, Warsaw, Poland
Tekiel averaged nearly four kills per set during another strong week for American as the Eagles finished with a 3-0 record and 2-0 in League play. She tallied 10 kills and no errors on 20 attempts in her team's 3-0 victory over Loyola (Md.), then netted a career-high 22 in a 3-1 victory over Bucknell. She added 11 more kills and 12 digs as the Eagles finished the road trip with a 3-1 win at Colgate.

Rookie of the Week
COURTNEY McCUTCHAN, LEHIGH Fr., OH, La Canada, Calif.
McCutchan recorded two double-doubles as Lehigh posted a 1-1 weekend in the opening of League play. She had 11 kills against both Army and Holy Cross, logging a .297 hitting percentage while tallying a career-best four aces against the Crusaders and tying a career high with three blocks against the Black Knights.

Honorable Mentions
CASEY RITT, COLGATE Sr., MB, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Ritt was sensational for the Raiders, logging a .471 hitting percentage with 28 kills and only four errors on 51 attempts in League match against Navy (a victory) and American (a loss). She also tallied 11 blocks for the week, nine assisted.

HEIDI KAMP, BUCKNELL Sr., MB, Eugene, Ore.
Kamp averaged 3.56 kills per set in two League matches over the weekend, including posting a career-best 21 kills in the Bison's exciting five-set win over Navy.

KAYLEE FIFER, COLGATE Fr., S, Lantana, Texas
Fifer totaled 63 assists and posted a 7.88 assist-per-set average, nearly two full assists above her season average, during a 1-1 weekend for the Raiders.

TAYLOR POOLE, LEHIGH So., MH, Keller, Texas
Poole hit .340 for the week, including a .500 performance in the Mountain Hawks' four-set win at Holy Cross.

Patriot League Cross Country Weekly Awards

Male Runner of the Week
ANDREW HANKO, NAVY Sr., Montville, N.J.
Hanko finished ninth out of 213 runners at the Roy Griak Invitational with a time of 24:27. This is Hanko's third straight weekly award for 2010 and seventh since 2009.

Female Runner of the Week
MARGARET BRUNO-METZGER, LAFAYETTE Sr., Bridgewater, N.J.
Bruno-Metzger won the individual title in a dual meet against Lehigh Saturday, finishing the 6K in 21:21.20.

Male Rookie of the Week
JIMMY MILLER, LEHIGH Fr., Ijamsville, Md.
Miller finished second out of 19 runners in a dual meet win over Lafayette Saturday. He ran the 8K race in 26:53.60 to post the Mountain Hawks' top freshman time for the second straight week.

Female Rookie of the Week
ROSE WILLEY, LAFAYETTE Fr., Brookfield, Conn.
Willey was the top freshman finisher in a dual meet with Lehigh Saturday, finishing the 6K in 21:44. She placed third overall. It was her highest finish and best time of the season.

Honorable Mention
EVANS KOSGEI, LEHIGH Sr., Moiben, Kenya
Kosgei finished first in Lehigh's dual-meet win over Lafayette Saturday, running the 8K race in 26:40. He was Lehigh's top finisher for the second straight meet.

KATHERINE PIERCE, LEHIGH Jr., Alfred, Maine
Pierce was Lehigh's top finisher for the seventh straight meet, placing second out of 20 runners in a dual-meet win over Lafayette. She ran the 6K in 21:32.3.
