Lehigh Leads Competitive Patriot League Presidents' Cup Race

Nov. 21, 2011

Center Valley, Pa. - A fall season that saw six different schools win a championship has produced a very tight race in the Patriot League Presidents' Cup standings, with Lehigh holding a slim lead over both American and Colgate.

The Mountain Hawks won their second consecutive Patriot League football title and made League tournaments in field hockey, men's soccer and volleyball to notch 33.5 points and claim the top spot in the overall standings. American, the Patriot League volleyball champion, comes next with 32.5 points followed by Colgate, the men's soccer champion, with 32.

The standings behind the top three are nearly as tight. Navy won both the men and women's cross country championships to notch 28.75 points and come in fourth place, just ahead of Bucknell (26.75), Army (26.5) and Lafayette (24.25) with Holy Cross (13.5) rounding out the standings. The Black Knights claimed the Patriot League Women's Soccer Championship, while the Leopards won the League crown in field hockey.

The races for the men and women's titles are just as close as the overall standings. Lehigh (17.75) holds the lead in the men's standings, ahead of American (14.5), Navy (13), Colgate (12), Bucknell (9), Army and Lafayette (8) and Holy Cross (6.5). In the women's race, Colgate (20) has the lead ahead of Army (18.5), American (18), Bucknell (17.75), Lafayette (16.25), Lehigh and Navy (15.75) and Holy Cross (7)

Patriot League Presidents' Cup points are awarded based on a team's performance in the regular season and postseason Patriot League standings. In cross country, golf, rowing, swimming and diving and track and field, the points are awarded based on the final team standing at the Patriot League Championship. Points for football are awarded based on regular-season standings.

Bucknell took home its 17th Patriot League Presidents' Cup at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season. Army is the only other team in League history to win the cup, taking home four trophies (1994, 1995, 1997, 2005). Bucknell also claimed its 17th women's title last season, while taking its eighth crown on the men's side.
