Patriot League Weekly Awards - (12.12.11)

Dec. 12, 2011

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Patriot League announced its weekly awards for Dec. 5-11 in indoor track & field and swimming & diving Monday.

Three Patriot League teams were in action over the weekend in indoor track and field and Lehigh walked away with three of six weekly awards after a strong performance at the Fast Times Before Finals at Lehigh, while four student-athletes were recognized for postseason-qualifying marks.

There was just one meet in swimming and diving last week, but it was a big one. It was the annual Star Meet between Army and Navy, with the Mids capturing the sweep at Crandall Pool at West Point Thursday evening. Three Patriot League records fell during the competition, with Navy junior Laura Gorinski setting the marks and rewriting other record books as well en route to capturing the Female Swimmer of the Week award. It was not a clean sweep of the weekly awards for Navy, however, as Army junior Chris Nguyen took both the one- and three-meter diving competitions to capture the Male Diver of the Week nod. Overall, Navy's performance was a dominant showing, as the Mids won their 21st consecutive meet against the Black Knights on the men's side, while the women set a total of 28 records, hit five NCAA B-cuts and defeated their rivals for the 23rd straight year. The schedule now takes an extended break until early January.

She set four records in all three of her individual victories, clocking a 1:00.72 in the 100-yard breast, a 2:11.10 in the 200 breast and a 2:00.33 in the 200 individual medley. Nguyen added the three-meter victory by scoring 299.25 points, edging out Navy's Ben Freedman by 6.75 points. The double victory by Nguyen marked the first time that an Army male diver has swept both boards against the Mids since 1980.

What a way to bolster one's senior season, as Vandament, a senior, collected her first career wins in the Army-Navy meet by sweeping the one- and three-meter dives in the Mids' 226.5-73.5 victory.
