April 25, 2011
Center Valley, Pa. -- The Patriot League announced its weekly awards for April 18-24 in men and women' lacrosse and outdoor track and field Monday.
Weekly awards for baseball and softball will be released Tuesday because inclement weather postponed weekend games to Monday.
MEN'S LACROSSE: Different week, different opponent but a similar script for Bucknell, which captured the regular-season Patriot League title and the No. 1 seed in the League Tournament with a 12-7 victory at Colgate Saturday night. Similar to the previous week when the Bison found themselves trailing at Lehigh early, Bucknell fell behind the Raiders 5-2 in the first quarter. The Bison defense clamped down for over 38 minutes, enabling the offense to tie the game heading into halftime, and goalkeeper Kyle Feeney went to work with six saves in the third as the Bison built a 9-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter en route to the win.
Colgate has to settle for the No. 2 seed in the League Tournament, and the Raiders will take on third-seeded and defending champion Army Friday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pa., at 5 p.m. Top-seeded Bucknell will host No. 4 Lehigh at 7:45 p.m. The winners will hit the field again Sunday at 3 p.m. with the League title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
All three games of the tournament will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
Army and Lehigh ensured they entered the League Tournament on a high note, as the Black Knights posted a 10-7 win in sloppy conditions at Holy Cross, while the Mountain Hawks doubled up Lafayette 14-7 in the annual tilt between the rivals. Navy concluded its season with a 14-5 defeat at No. 2/2 Johns Hopkins Saturday night.
There wasn't much shifting from last week to this week in Monday's national rankings. Bucknell (12th), Colgate (16th) and Army (17th) all remained in the same position as last week in the USILA Coaches Poll. There was some movement in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, as Colgate fell to No. 19 while Army climbed to 16th. Bucknell remained at No. 12.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE: The Colgate Raiders had to wait about 2 1/2 hours Saturday after their 20-7 win over Bucknell to find out their fate.
As soon as Lehigh upended Navy, the Raiders were rejoicing in Hamilton, N.Y., because that is where they'll remain throughout the 2011 Patriot League Tournament.
Locking up the No. 1 seed, Colgate (8-6, 5-1) will face American (9-7, 3-3) in the first semifinal at 4 p.m.
Lehigh (10-6, 5-1 Patriot League) will be the No. 2 seed and Navy (12-5, 4-2) is third, which means the two teams will rematch at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Both semifinal games can be viewed on Patriot League All-Access.
The championship game, set for 3 p.m. Saturday, will be telecast live on CBS Sports Network.
The rematch of Lehigh and Navy was made possible by offense of midfielder Lauren Dykstra and the defense by back-up goalie MaryLeah DiNisco. With the 15-13 win in a game that was televised on CBS Sports Network, Lehigh denied Navy the chance to be the No. 1 seed.
Dykstra scored four goals to move her season total to 68, the most in the Patriot League this season. She was named the League's Offensive Player of the Week.
DiNisco, who came off the bench to take over at goalkeeper when the score was tied at 8-8, was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Colgate's Courtney Miller was named the Midfield Player of the Week and Lafayette's Ana White was the Rookie of the Week.
OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD: Navy and Bucknell swept the weekly awards as several IC4A- and ECAC-qualifying marks were hit over the weekend.
Many postseason standards were met at the Larry Ellis Invitational, where Army, Colgate, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy competed.
Navy led the way with four weekly award winners, with Cody Rome taking the Male Track Athlete of the Week for the first time this season. Jess Palacio tied a Patriot League record and won her third Female Track of the Week award and Lauren Allam tied a League record with her fourth Female Rookie of the Week award. Amanda Phelps won her second Female Field Athlete of the Week award.
Bucknell's Leonard Joseph, a four-time weekly award winner in indoor track and field, grabbed his first outdoor award being named the Male Field Athlete of the Week and Alex Prieto was named the Male Rookie of the Week.
Seven schools will compete at the Penn Relays starting Thursday as Holy Cross has the week off. Lehigh also will host the Lehigh Invitational where Lafayette will compete. Bucknell also will compete at the Bloomsburg Maroon and Gold Open.
