Patriot League Weekly Awards (3.4.13)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — The Patriot League announced its weekly awards for Feb. 25-March 3 in men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, baseball and softball.

Todd Heritage and Sean Doyle propelled Bucknell to an 11-2 win over Navy in the first League game of the men’s lacrosse season Saturday. Elsewhere, Garrett Thul broke the Army career goals record and took over the lead in the race for the all-time League mark as well in a 12-1 rout of Michigan. Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh also picked up at least one win last week.

League play begins in women’s lacrosse this weekend, with No. 15 Navy and Lafayette holding the most momentum going in. The Mids improved to 5-0 with a 12-8 win over Richmond on Saturday, while the Leopards are 4-1 as Addie Godfrey leads the way with 27 goals on the season.

Lehigh won four of its six games last week, and is the only Patriot League baseball team with a winning mark to date. The Mountain Hawks broke droughts in the Patriot League weekly awards as Justin Pacchioli earned the school’s first Player of the Week honor since 2007 and Colin Gotzon was the Mountain Hawks’ first Pitcher of the Week since 2011.

The first awards of the softball season are out, with Lehigh capturing a pair and Army one. The defending champion Mountain Hawks won three games over the weekend in their first action of the spring, while Army and Bucknell have played games over multiple weekends to start. Holy Cross and Lafayette also opened play over the weekend, while Colgate is on the diamond starting Friday.


Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Awards

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
GARRETT THUL, ARMY
Sr., A, Flemington, N.J.
Thul broke Army’s 35-year-old career goals record with a career high-tying seven tallies in the Black Knights’ 12-1 walloping of Michigan at the Orange Bowl Lacrosse Classic Saturday in Miami. He added an assist for his second eight-point outing of the season. Thul is up to 141 career goals, which also gives him the all-time lead in career goals in League history. He scored a natural hat trick over a four-minute stretch of the second quarter to turn a 3-1 lead into a 6-1 advantage. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ALEX SPRING, BUCKNELL
Fr., LSM, New York, N.Y.
Spring enjoyed the best game of his young career in Bucknell’s 11-2 win over Navy Saturday with five caused turnovers and six groundballs. The Bison shut out the Mids over the game’s final 51:08 and held a Navy squad that was averaging 12 goals per game to just a pair in the first quarter. Spring was part of a Bucknell defense that forced 22 turnovers that led to a 57-14 advantage in shots.

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
JAKE HYATT, LAFAYETTE
Jr., GK, Ridgefield, Conn.
Hyatt posted a 1-1 week for the Leopards, and combined to stop 32 shots and post a .653 save percentage. He opened the week with 16 saves in Lafayette’s 13-9 win over Wagner, and came up with another 16 saves to keep the Leopards in the game in an eventual 8-5 loss to Marist Saturday.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
SEAN DOYLE, BUCKNELL
Fr., A, Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.
Doyle scored his first career hat trick and finished with four points in Bucknell’s 11-2 victory over Navy Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa. He assisted on Todd Heritage’s go-ahead goal in the second quarter that broke a 2-2 tie, and scored twice in succession later in the frame to give the Bison a 5-2 lead. Doyle also scored in the fourth quarter to finish off his hat trick.

SAM SOMERS, ARMY
So., GK, Wilton, Conn.
Made 12 saves for a .923 save percentage against Michigan before being relieved late in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 12-1 win.

TODD HERITAGE, BUCKNELL Jr., A, Cheshire, Conn.
Finished with two goals, four points and an eye-popping nine groundballs in Bucknell’s win over Navy.

CLAY HAARMANN, HOLY CROSS So., A, Mendham, N.J.
Scored 10 goals and 11 points on the week, including a seven-goal, one-assist performance in a 16-12 loss at Harvard. Averaged five goals and four groundballs per game. Also netted a hat trick in Saturday’s 11-9 win over Sacred Heart.

BRIAN BOCK, LAFAYETTE So., A, Collegeville, Pa.
Scored twice and finished with six points in a 13-9 win over Wagner. Added three points in Saturday’s 8-5 loss to Marist.

KEVIN WANKE, LAFAYETTE Fr., A, Skillman, N.J.
Netted a pair of hat tricks on the week and finished with seven points.

DAVID DiMARIA, LEHIGH Sr., A, Dix Hills, N.Y.
Scored his third seven-point game of the season and tallied a hat trick in Lehigh’s 18-2 demolishing of VMI Saturday. Leads the League with 29 points and is third with 14 goals.


Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Awards

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ADDIE GODFREY, LAFAYETTE
Sr., A, Princeton, N.J.
Godfrey continued her outstanding play early in the season with two more games of six goals or more last week. She scored seven goals with two ground balls and a draw control in a 16-9 win over Columbia on Wednesday, then totaled six goals and an assist with a ground ball and two draw controls in a 15-12 loss at Temple on Saturday. Godfrey leads the Patriot League with 27 goals this season, and also tops the charts with 33 points. She is named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight time and third in her career.

MIDFIELD PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ANA WHITE, LAFAYETTE
Jr., M, Swarthmore, Pa.
White became the all-time Patriot League record holder in draw controls as part of a week where she played a pair of solid games. White tallied four goals and two assists with two ground balls and 10 draw controls in a 16-9 win over Columbia on Wednesday, and in the process broke the all-time mark of 218 draw controls held by Navy’s Erin Rawlick (2008-10). White added three goals with a ground ball and four draw controls in a 15-12 loss to Temple on Saturday. She has 230 career draw controls early in her junior season. White is named Patriot League Midfield Player of the Week for the eighth time in her career, four ahead of any other player in the three-year history of the honor.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ANNIE FOKY, NAVY
So., GK, Charlottesville, Va.
Foky earns the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honor for the second straight time after backstopping Navy to a 12-8 win over Richmond on Saturday. She tied a career-high with 11 saves on 19 shots and picked up four ground balls in the victory. Foky is 3-0 as Navy’s starting goalie, and leads the Patriot League with a 5.43 goals against average and .587 save percentage. The victory and 5-0 start helped Navy move up four spots to No. 15 in Monday’s deBeer Media Poll.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
LAUREN GORAJEK, COLGATE
Fr., M, Hightstown, N.J.
Gorajek claims her second consecutive Patriot League Rookie of the Week award after scoring three goals in a 13-7 loss to UMBC on Saturday. Each of her tallies came in the first half as Colgate took a 6-4 lead at the break.

Generi scored five goals, had two assists and registered seven draw controls in a 12-8 win over Richmond on Saturday.

JULIE McBRIEN, LEHIGH Jr., M, Pearl River, N.Y.
McBrien scored a career-high six goals to lead Lehigh to an 11-10 win in double overtime at Binghamton on Wednesday.

KAT SUTTON, HOLY CROSS Sr., A, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Sutton had six goals in two games for the Crusaders last week, including four in a 16-8 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday.

LAURA RYAN, HOLY CROSS So., M, Stirling, N.J.
Ryan had four goals and an assist with six draw controls in a 16-8 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday.


Patriot League Baseball Weekly Awards

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JUSTIN PACCHIOLI, LEHIGH
So., OF, Easton, Pa.
Pacchioli batted .533 in four games for the Mountain Hawks as Lehigh went 4-2 in its action last week. He was 5-for-10 with a double, triple, three runs and five RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday. Pacchioli also put up a 3-for-4 performance in a loss to Fordham on Saturday. He is named Patriot League Player of the Week for the first time, and is the first winner of the award from Lehigh since 2007.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
COLIN GOTZON, LEHIGH
Jr., P, Bethlehem, Pa.
Gotzon picked up a pair of victories last week as he allowed one run in nine innings of work against Maryland Eastern Shore and Iona. He earned the win against UMES by going five innings with one run allowed on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts in the 13-2 triumph. Gotzon came out of the bullpen against Iona and shut down the Gaels, tossing four scoreless innings with two hits and three walks surrendered while striking out six as Lehigh pulled out a 4-3 win in 10 innings. He struck out nine batters in his nine innings of work for the week. Gotzon earns his first Patriot League Pitcher of the Week award, and first for Lehigh since 2011.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
MAX KRA, BUCKNELL
Fr., P/3B, Bethesda, Md.
Kra saved Bucknell’s first win of the year on Sunday, pitching two scoreless innings with two hits allowed and one strikeout in a 7-4 triumph over Harvard. He retired the side in order in the eighth inning, and induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Kra has not allowed a run in three appearances covering 6.2 innings this season and claims his first Rookie of the Week award.

GREG DUPELL, NAVY
Sr., OF, Tampa, Fla.
Dupell batted .500 with three doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored in Navy’s four-game weekend series with Central Connecticut.

BRANDON CIPOLLA, HOLY CROSS Jr., OF, Abington, Mass.
Cipolla hit .538 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a double in Holy Cross’ three-game series at Nevada, and leads the Patriot League with a .458 batting average this season.

BRYSON HOUGH, BUCKNELL So., P, Fairfax, Va.
Hough allowed one run over seven innings and left with the score tied in Bucknell’s 2-1 10-inning loss to Harvard on Friday.


Patriot League Softball Weekly Awards

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
AMANDA NGUYEN, ARMY
Jr., OF, Houston, Texas
Nguyen had a big weekend at the plate, going 9-for-14 with six runs scored and six steals during the Black Knights’ four games at the Spartan Classic. In all, Nguyen has started the season hitting .394 (13-for-33) and has scored nine times. After going 1-for-4 at the plate in the Spartan opener against Delaware, Nguyen was 3-for-3 with three steals and four runs scored in Saturday’s 8-6 loss to Norfolk State. She was 5-for-7 for the Black Knights Sunday, including a 3-for-4 showing with two steals in Army’s 4-2 win over Delaware.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK
EMILY BAUSHER, LEHIGH
So., P, New Egypt, N.J.
Bausher went 1-0 in two appearances for defending Patriot League champion Lehigh with a 0.78 earned-run average while limiting opposing hitters to .194 at the Towson Invitational. She pitched four innings and allowed four runs, just one earned, on three hits and a pair of walks with three strikeouts in Lehigh’s 4-4 tie with Towson that was shortened because of darkness. Her win came Sunday as she went five innings and allowed two runs (none earned) on four hits with no walks and six punchouts in Lehigh’s 3-2 win over Columbia.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
MORGAN DECKER, LEHIGH
Fr., 3B, Jamison, Pa.
Decker opened her collegiate career going 4-for-11 at the plate and reaching base in all five games over the weekend during Lehigh’s 3-1-1 start to the 2013 campaign. She started with a four-game hitting streak, which was halted after an 0-for-1 showing with two walks in the Mountain Hawks’ 6-2 win over Iona Sunday. Decker went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in her first collegiate outing, a 5-4 victory over Columbia, before driving in runs in two other games over the weekend to finish with four in the five games. Decker his .364, slugged .455 and has a .579 on-base percentage in the season’s early going.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
KASEY McCRAVEY, ARMY
Fr., 3B, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Hit .321 with one home run, seven RBIs and six runs scored in Army’s first nine games. Has hit safely in five games, including each of the last three at the Spartan Classic.

CYDNE SANDERS, BUCKNELL So., SS, Magnolia, Texas
Hit 9-for-33 (.273) in the Bison’s first 11 games with six runs scored, six walks and three RBIs. Started the season reaching base in four of the first five games and currently has a three-game hitting streak.

CASSIE WAGGY, LEHIGH So., 1B, Manteca, Calif.
Started the season 4-for-11 at the plate with one home run and four RBIs in the Mountain Hawks’ stay at the Towson Invitational over the weekend.
