NCAA Public Recognition Awards

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Patriot League schools were among the leaders in NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program (APP) Public Recognition Awards on Wednesday, with 71 League-sponsored teams and 74 overall from full-member institutions honored for finishing in the top 10 percent of their sport in the most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) data.

Bucknell led all schools with 19 teams receiving Public Recognition Awards, with all but one of those competing in the Patriot League. The Bison also placed third in the nation in Public Recognition Awards, behind only Dartmouth (25) and Brown (20). Lafayette had 16 teams, all in the Patriot League, receive the honor, while Colgate finished with 13 and Holy Cross had 11.

At least one team was recognized in all 24 Patriot League sports. A League-high five teams were recognized in both women's lacrosse and women's tennis, while four were honored in men's basketball, men's cross country, men's soccer, women's cross country, women's rowing and women's swimming and diving. Thirty men's and 41 women's teams were honored out of the Patriot League.

American, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh are part of a group of 61 schools which have received at least one Public Recognition Award in each of the eight years of the program. Boston University and Loyola University Maryland, which officially enter the Patriot League on July 1, were also part of that group.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. This year's release will again include recognition in the sport of football by subdivision (i.e., Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision).

The 976 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 594 women's teams and 382 men's or mixex squads. Top performing APRs this year ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000, with the majority of recognized teams earning a perfect APR.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced June 11. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.
