WORCESTER, Mass. -- Three different teams captures Grand Final race wins but it was the United States Naval Academy that claimed the 2016 Patriot League Rowing Championship -- the Midshipmen's second straight -- with 49 points on Friday at Lake Quinsigamond.
Boston University, which took first in the Varsity Eight by 3.829 seconds, finished one point shy with 48 to claim the runner-up trophy. Bucknell, which took first in the Second Varsity Eight, totaled 44 points for third place and was followed by MIT in fourth (35), Georgetown in fifth (33), Holy Cross in sixth (23), Colgate in seventh (17), Lehigh in eighth (13) and Loyola Maryland placing ninth (5).
Going in to the Varsity Eight Grand Final, Bucknell held a one-point lead over Navy, 26-25, while Boston U. was in third with 21. It was the Terriers, however, that crossed the line first, finishing in 7:13.522 and the Midshipmen followed at 7:17.351. The Bison's fourth place finish (7:21.944) in the event dropped them out of the race for the crown.
The Mids earn the automatic bid in to the NCAA Women's Rowing Championship to the NCAA Division I Rowing Championship, set for May 27-29 at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif. Last year at NCAAs, Navy placed 21st on Lake Natoma at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.
Boston U. head coach Stacey Rippetoe was recognized as the Patriot League Coach of the Year -- her second since earning the honor in 2014 -- and the Terriers' varsity eight boat was named the Patriot League Boat of the Year.
