BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland was crowned the 2017 Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse champion on Sunday, defeating Army West Point, 13-4, at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The Greyhounds receive the League’s automatic berth to the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship and will learn their opponent during the selection show on Sunday, May 7 at 9 p.m.
 
The Black Knights opened up the scoring when senior Matthew Donovan tallied an unassisted goal with 11:10 on the clock in the first quarter. Just over a minute later, Loyola was on the board after sophomore Pat Spencer scored his 27th goal of the season.
 
The home team tallied two more goals for a 3-1 lead before Army came back to knot the score up at 3-3. Both goals were scored by junior David Symmes, who tallied the latter with 3.7 seconds on the clock in the first frame.
 
Loyola’s offense began to find its rhythm and scored five goals, while the defense held the Black Knights scoreless, to take an 8-3 lead into the break.
 
With 12:03 on the clock in the third quarter, senior Gunnar Miller found the back of the net off a feed from Symmes to cut the deficit down to four, but it was the final goal Army would score in the game, as the Greyhounds tallied five more for the 13-4 victory.
 
Loyola has won three Patriot League tournament titles in its last four appearances -- since joining the League in 2014. The Greyhounds are also the first No. 1 seed to win since they won when they were the No. 1 seed during their first year in the League.
 
Senior Graham Savio became the first Patriot League player to reach 700 career faceoff wins, finishing the game with 9-for-20 at the X to bring his career total to 702.
 
Spencer set a school and Patriot League single-season assists record with his three assists in the game. He now has 55 assists this season, surpassing Loyola’s Justin Ward’s 53 assists (the previous record) from the 2014 season.
