Army West Point Captures Game One of Patriot League Baseball Championship Series

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – No. 2 Army West Point (34-22, 18-7 PL) scored five runs over the final two innings and held off host and top-seed Navy’s (38-15, 18-7 PL) rally in the bottom of the ninth to seal an 8-5 victory in game one of the 2018 Patriot League Baseball Championship Series on Sunday afternoon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.
 
After play at the championship series was postponed for two days due to storms in the Annapolis, Md. area, the Midshipmen and Black Knights were able to take the field on Sunday for game one. A Patriot League Baseball Champion will be crowned on Monday, with game two of the best two-of-three series is scheduled for a noon first-pitch. Game three, if necessary, will follow at 3 p.m. The winner of the championship series will clinch the Patriot League’s automatic berth to the NCAA DI Baseball Regional Championships.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Army West Point freshman third baseman Anthony Giachin – the Patriot League Rookie of the Year – went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while junior second baseman Josh White went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Black Knights to an 8-5 victory over Navy in the first game of the Patriot League Baseball Championship Series.
*Black Knights’ junior LHP Tyler Giovinco earned the victory, completing 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out four and walking two. Sophomore reliever Logan Smith retired one batter in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn the save.
*Navy junior RHP Noah Song was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings, while striking out eight and walking three.
*Army West Point struck first in the top of the third inning, as Giachin singled through the right side of the infield to score Patriot League Player of the Year senior catcher Jon Rosoff.
*Junior shortstop Trey Martin, the next batter, put down a sacrifice bunt that allowed junior second baseman Josh White to score from third base, giving the Black Knights a 2-0 lead.
*Navy senior centerfielder Logan Knowles hit a two-run home run over the wall in right field to tie the score at two runs apiece in the bottom of the fifth inning.
*Giachin hit a solo homer to right centerfield to lead off the top of the sixth inning, putting the Black Knights back in front 3-2.
*In the top of the eighth inning, junior DH Matt Hudgins doubled to right field to drive-in White. Sophomore right fielder Drake Titus singled during the next at-bat to score Martin, expanding the Black Knights’ lead to 5-2.
*White hit a two-run triple and scored on Giachin’s sacrifice fly to extend Army West Point’s lead to 8-2 in the top of the ninth inning.
*A pair of Army fielding errors allowed Navy to rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. A sacrifice fly from junior pinch-hitter Matthew Wilcox plated sophomore third baseman Jacob Williamson.
*Sophomore shortstop Michael Coritz, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, followed with a double to left field, driving in junior designated hitter Liam Lowery, making the score 8-4.
*Patriot League Defensive Player of the year sophomore second baseman Zach Biggers doubled to drive in Coritz, bringing Navy within three runs, 8-5.
*The Midshipmen would bring the tying run to the plate, but Army West Point sophomore reliever Logan Smith came on to get the final out to earn a save.
