RALEIGH, N.C. - Junior lefthanded pitcher Tyler Giovinco allowed just one run, while scattering seven hits over 6.1 innings to earn the victory, as Army West Point defeated NC State, 5-1, on Friday night in its first game at the NCAA DI Baseball Championship Raleigh Regional.
*The Black Knights' bullpen combined for 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, as junior RHP threw 1.0 inning, before junior LHP Cam Opp sealed the game with the final 1.2 innings.
*Freshman third baseman Anthony Giachin - the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Patriot League Championship Most Outstanding Player - went 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while sophomore center fielder Jacob Hurtubise also scored twice, going 1-for-3 with two walks and two stolen bases.
*In the top of the third inning, Hurtubise laced a one-out single to right field, then stole second base. He eventually scored the game's first run when Patriot League Player of the Year senior catcher Jon Rosoff grounded out to first base.
*An inning later Giachin drew a leadoff walk, moved to third base on a throwing error and scored soon after on Trey Martin's sacrifice fly, making the score 2-0.
*Pinch hitter Rob Regine doubled down the left field line to score Giachin in the top of the sixth inning. Martin scored on a Drake Titus sacrifice fly one batter later, putting Army West Point in front 4-0.
*Hurtubise, the nation's stolen bases leader, stole his second base of the game after drawing a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh inning. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch, before scoring on Giachin's base hit to right field, giving the Black Knights a 5-0 lead.
*The Wolfpack scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning
*The Black Knights victory over NC State is the 10th win by a Patriot League program in the NCAA DI Baseball Championships since 1991. It is the first time a League team has won its first game of the tournament since Bucknell defeated top-seed Florida State in 2008.
*Army West Point will move on to play No. 2 Auburn on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The Tigers defeated No. 3 Northeastern, 13-4, on Friday afternoon.
