CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — The Lehigh Mountain Hawks and Loyola Maryland Greyhounds earned two Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse weekly honors each while Boston University grabbed one as weekly awards were announced on Monday by the League office.
Loyola Maryland senior attackmen Pat Spencer was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week while freshman midfielder Chase Scanlan earned rookie of the week. Lehigh junior Conor Gaffney nabbed faceoff specialist of the week and sophomore James Spence received goalkeeper of the week accolades. Boston University junior long-stick midfielder Reece Eddy rounded out the awards as Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week.
Eight Patriot League men’s lacrosse student-athletes earned honorable mentions; Army West Point freshman faceoff specialist Ethan Barangan, Boston University sophomore attackmen Chris Gray and junior goalie Joe McSorley, Holy Cross junior faceoff specialist Dan O’Connell and freshman attackmen Will Spangenberg, Lehigh sophomore defender Teddy Leggett, and Navy sophomore attackmen Christian Daniel and junior goalie Ryan Kern.
Offensive Player of the Week
Pat Spencer, Loyola Maryland, Sr., A, Davidsonville, Md./Boys Latin School of Maryland
* Spencer became the 15th player in NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse history, and the first in the Patriot League to score 300 career points last week as he finished with 16 points on four goals and 12 assists in two games.
* He tallied one goal and four assists on Wednesday night against No. 7 Towson, followed by a season-high 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) in the 19-15 win over Holy Cross.
* Spencer eight assists and 11 points on Saturday is the most by any player in one NCAA Division I game this season.
* After this past weekend, the senior is now fifth in NCAA Division I history in assists (186) and 15th in points (303).
* Spencer, a nine-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, is the most decorated offensive weekly honoree in Patriot League men’s lacrosse history.
Defensive Player of the Week
Reece Eddy, Boston University, Jr., LSM, Skaneateles, N.Y./Canisius
* In the 14-9 defeat versus Bryant, the junior recorded three ground balls and one caused turnover to go with his first goal at Boston University.
* Eddy matched the Terriers’ program record with six caused turnovers and he also gathered seven ground balls in the 12-4 win over Vermont this weekend.
Faceoff Specialist of the Week
Conor Gaffney, Lehigh, Jr., M/FO, Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape
* Gaffney won 17-of-20 faceoffs with 14 ground balls in the 10-8 win versus then No. 16 Colgate.
* Gaffney was 8-of-10 in the first half and 9-of-10 in the second half for the Mountain Hawks.
* The junior stands fifth national in faceoff percentage (68.8) to go along with 41 ground balls.
Goalkeeper of the Week
James Spence, Lehigh, So., GK, Springfield, Pa./Springfield
* Spence made 11 saves and registered a .579 save percentage in the 10-8 win over then No. 16 Colgate.
* Spence stopped 4-of-5 shots in the first quarter and 6-of-8 shots in the first half to help the Mountain Hawks to a 6-2 advantage going into the third quarter.
* For the season, the sophomore owns an 8.71 goals against average and a .521 save percentage.
Rookie of the Week
Chase Scanlan, Loyola Maryland, Fr., M, Irving, N.Y./IMG Academy (Fla.)
* Scanlan scored 10 points on six goals and four assists in two games last week.
* The rookie had one goal and two assists on Wednesday night against then No. 7 Towson, and then scored five goals and dished out two assists in the 19-15 victory over Holy Cross.
* Scanlan shot .545 percent in the two games, scoring his six goals on just 11 shots.
Honorable Mentions
Ethan Barangan, Army West Point, Fr., FO, Plainfield, Ill./Culver Academies
* Barangan went 18-for-20 in the circle for Army, to go with a career-high 11 groundballs. The freshman now leads the Patriot League with .760 faceoff percentage.
Chris Gray, Boston University, So., A, Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River
* Gray ended last week with five goals and seven assists for 12 points. He scored two goals and dished five assists in the 14-9 win over Bryant, followed by three goals and two assists in the 12-4 win against Vermont.
Joe McSorley, Boston University, Jr., GK, Forest Hill, Md./Calvert Hall
* McSorley finished the week with a .629 save percentage over two games, as he combined for 22 saves in the 14-9 win over Bryant and the 12-4 win over Vermont.
Dan O’Connell, Holy Cross, Jr., FO, Winchester, Mass./Winchester
* O’Connell went 22-for-26 at the faceoff position in the Crusaders’ 11-10 overtime win at Harvard. The junior then went 18-for-36 against Loyola Maryland on Saturday.
Will Spangenberg, Holy Cross, A, Fr., Dover, Mass./Phillips Exeter
* Spangenberg posted four goals and five assists in two games played against Harvard and Loyola Maryland. In the 11-10 OT win at Harvard, the freshman scored the game-winning goal for the Crusaders in their eight-goal comeback.
Teddy Leggett, Lehigh, So., LSM/D, Vaughan, Ontario/The Hill Academy
* Leggett collected five ground balls in the 10-8 victory at then No. 16 Colgate on Saturday. For the season, Leggett recorded 24 ground balls and nine caused turnovers, along with two goals.
Christian Daniel, Navy, A, So., Owings, Md./Northern
* Daniel produced a career-high seven points with a team-best four goals and three assists in the Mids’ 14-8 win over Bucknell. The sophomore earned his third hat trick of the season and fifth of his career.
Ryan Kern, Navy, Jr., GK, Middletown, Del./Salesianum
* Kern totaled nine saves in the 14-8 win over Bucknell, including seven during the first 45 minutes. Kern is just four saves away from becoming the 14th player in school history with 300 career saves.
