Boston University Wins Patriot League Softball Championship for Second Consecutive Year

BOSTON, Mass. - The Boston University Terriers claimed their second consecutive Patriot League Softball title on Saturday with a 14-7 win over Lehigh at the BU Softball Field in Boston, Mass.

Boston University senior catcher Alex Heinen, the 2019 Patriot League Player and Defensive Player of the Year, was named Tournament MVP after going 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and one home run during Saturday's championship game. Freshman pitcher Emily Gant picked up a win in the circle for the Terriers and was named to the 2019 Patriot League Softball All-Tournament Team. Heinen and Gant are joined by fellow Terriers, sophomore pitcher Ali DuBois and senior infielder Madi Killebrew, on the All-Tournament Team.

Lehigh placed three players on the All-Tournament team, followed by Bucknell and Colgate who each placed two on the team.

Boston U. received the League's automatic berth to the NCAA Softball Tournament and will learn their opponent during the selection show on Sunday, May 12 at 9 p.m. on ESPN2.

BOSTON - Boston University freshman pitcher Emily Gant picked up the win in 3.2 innings of relief while also going 3-for-3 with two RBIs at the plate to help the Terriers claim its second consecutive Patriot League Championship.
*Tournament MVP Alex Heinen went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs scored. Senior shortstop Madi Killebrew went 2-for-4 with a game-high four RBIs, and freshman right fielder AJ Huerta-Leipner went 3-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI.
*Lehigh freshman right fielder Jaelynn Chesson went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run and freshman shortstop Carley Barjaktarovi went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the loss.
*The Mountain Hawks scored first on junior Reva Alderman's two-run single in the top of the second inning.
*The Terriers responded on a double steal, with Killebrew stealing home to cut Lehigh's lead in half in the bottom of the second inning.
*Barjaktarovi single scored junior Lexi van Ooyen to increase Lehigh's lead to 3-1 in the top of the third inning.
*BU tied the score at three apiece a half inning later, as Killebrew drove in a run and junior Kali Magane scored on an error. Gant drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single to right center, giving the Terriers a 4-3 lead.
*In the bottom of the fourth inning, Heinen's two-run home run extended BU's lead to three runs, at 6-3.
*Lehigh added one run in the top of the fifth inning before Chesson launched a three-run home run to put the Mountain Hawks back in front, 7-6, in the top of the sixth.
*With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Killebrew hit a three-run home run to start an eight-run half inning by the Terriers.
*DuBois reentered the game and induced three Lehigh ground outs in the top of the seventh to preserve the Terriers victory.
