CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Army West Point nabbed three weekly honors while Boston University and Bucknell earned one accolade each when the League office announced the results on Monday.
Black Knights sophomore attack Brendan Nichtern was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week. Teammate sophomore Marcus Hudgins received defensive player of the week and sophomore Wyatt Schupler earned goalkeeper of the week.
Boston U junior Sean Christman received faceoff specialist of the week while Bucknell freshman midfielder rounded out the awards as Patriot League Rookie of the Week.
Boston U junior long-stick midfielder Reece Eddy, Colgate junior midfielder Mike Hawkins, Lehigh sophomore attack Tommy Schelling and sophomore defender Anthony Tangredi, Loyola Maryland junior faceoff specialist Bailey Savio and Navy senior goalkeeper Ryan Kern all earned honorable mentions.
Offensive Player of the Week
Brendan Nichtern, Army West Point, So., A, Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa (USMAPS)
* Nichtern led the team with four goals and three assists in the 17-4 win over No. 18 UMass on Saturday.
* The game marked Nichtern’s second year in a row registering seven points against the nationally ranked Minutemen in the season opener.
* The sophomore was one of nine Army West Point players to post multiple points in the contest.
Defensive Player of the Week
Marcus Hudgins, Army West Point, So., D, Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee (USMAPS)
* Hudgins notched a career-high and team-best three caused turnovers and added three groundballs in the Black Knights’ 17-4 win over No. 18 UMass.
* The sophomore was part of the defensive unit that held the Minutemen to just four goals and unsuccessful on five man-up opportunities in the game.
Faceoff Specialist of the Week
Sean Christman, Boston University, Jr., M/FO, Kimberton, Pa./Malvern Prep
* Christman won 15-of-18 draws (.833) and collected 12 ground balls against No. 12 Ohio State this past weekend.
* Christman also added an assist to the stat sheet.
* He has only lost nine faceoffs through two games and for a success rate of 76.9%.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Wyatt Schupler, Army West Point, So., GK, Ponte Vedra, Fla./Ponte Vedra
* In his collegiate debut, Schupler shutout No. 18 UMass in the first half making 10 saves, while allowing just four goals after facing 25 shots on net.
* The sophomore boasted a 4.56 goals-against average and a .765 save percentage, in addition to a pair off ground balls.
* The 17-4 win marked the Black Knights' first time shutting out an opponent in the first half since 2018 when Army was leading 6-0 after the first 30 minutes of action at Lafayette.
Rookie of the Week
Harry Wellford, Bucknell, Fr., M, St. Louis, Mo./Micds/Avon Old Farms (Conn.)
* Wellford netted four goals during the Bison’s 8-3 second-half run in the 11-9 victory at Bryant.
* The freshman also picked up a pair of ground balls in the win.
Honorable Mentions
Reece Eddy, Boston University, Sr., LSM, Skaneateles, N.Y./Canisius
* Eddy totaled a season-high eight ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers against No.12 Ohio State on Saturday.
Mike Hawkins, Colgate, Jr., M, Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury
* Hawkins matched his career-high in goals with five against No. 5 Syracuse this past weekend.
Tommy Schelling, Lehigh, So., A, Warren, N.J./Delbarton
* Schelling posted career highs in goals (7) and points (9) in the team’s 16-11 win over Utah on Saturday.
* His seven goals were the most by a Mountain Hawk since Dan Taylor in 2014, while his nine points were most by a Lehigh player since Taylor posted nine points in 2015.
Anthony Tangredi, Lehigh, So., D, Smithtown, N.J./Chaminade
* Tangredi posted a career-high seven ground balls and three caused turnovers in Lehigh’s 16-11 victory against Utah.
Bailey Savio, Loyola, Jr., Face-Off Specialist, Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich
* Savio went 14-of-24 at the X and grabbed eight ground balls against No. 1 Virginia.
* He was 7-of-7 in the third quarter as Loyola started a 4-0 run. Overall, he was 9-of-11 in the second half.
Ryan Kern, Navy, Sr., GK, Middletown, Del./Salesianum
* Kern recorded 14 saves and a .778 save percentage in goal in Navy’s 9-4 win over Manhattan last Friday night.
