Patriot League Announces Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week (3.9.20)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Lehigh nabbed two men’s lacrosse weekly awards while Army West Point, Holy Cross and Navy each earned one men’s lacrosse weekly accolade each when the League office announced results on Monday.
 
Lehigh sophomore Anthony Tangredi received the defensive player of the week while teammate Christian Mule’ earned the rookie of the week. Holy Cross senior Dan O’Connell captured faceoff specialist of the week honors for the second-straight week, while Army sophomore Wyatt Schupler was the named goalkeeper of the week. In addition, Navy junior Tyler Perreten claimed the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week.
 
Colgate senior Malcolm Feeney, Lafayette freshman attack Macklin Fitzpatrick, Lehigh sophomore Tommy Schelling, Loyola Maryland junior Bailey Savio, and Navy senior Ryan Kern and freshman Patrick Skalniak all earned honorable mentions.
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Tyler Perreten, Navy, Jr., A, Crofton, Md./Severn School
* Perreten contributed five goals (on five shots) and two assists for seven points in the team’s 16-14 victory over Colgate. His point, goal and assist totals were all career highs.
* The seven points and five goals are the most by a Navy player this year.
* The junior currently is the Mids’ second-leading scorer with 15 points on a team-best 11 goals and four assists.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Anthony Tangredi, Lehigh, So., Smithtown, N.Y./Chaminade

* Tangredi posted three ground balls and a career-high five caused turnovers in the Mountain Hawks’ 15-10 win over Holy Cross.
* The sophomore earned two caused turnovers in the first and third quarters and all three ground balls in the fourth.
* After allowing four goals over the game's first 8:24, Tangredi and the Mountain Hawks allowed just six goals during the final 51:36. Lehigh held Holy Cross scoreless for a stretch of 21:12 bridging the third and fourth quarters during Lehigh's 7-0 run that turned a 9-7 deficit into a 14-9 lead.
 
Faceoff Specialist of the Week 
Dan O’Connell, Holy Cross, Sr., FO, Winchester, Mass./ Winchester
* O’Connell went 17-for-27 at the ‘X’ for a .629 winning percentage in the game against Lehigh on Saturday.
* The senior also picked up eight ground balls.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week 
Wyatt Schupler, Army West Point, So., GK, Ponte Vedra, Fla./Ponte Vedra

* Schupler went 2-0 last week with an 8.27 goals against average and .529 save percentage in victories over Binghamton (15-10) and Lafayette (16-8).
* He allowed just 18 goals on 70 shots faced in 2020, and garnered two ground balls and caused his first-career caused turnover.
* The sophomore currently ranks third in NCAA for GAA (7.29) and save percentage (.622).
 
Rookie of the Week 
Christian Mule’, Lehigh, Fr., A, Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West
* Mule' tallied his third straight hat trick in Saturday's 15-10 win over Holy Cross, with all three goals coming on just four shots.
*All three of Mule’s goals came in the game's final 17:49. He scored twice in Lehigh's 7-0 run that turned a 9-7 deficit into a 14-9 lead.
* For the season, Mule' is third on the Mountain Hawks in goals (16) and points (21).

Honorable Mentions
Malcolm Feeney, Colgate, Sr., FO, 6-0, 185, Summit, N.J./Summit
* Feeney won a career-high 23 faceoffs in 34 attempts, and added five ground balls against Navy.

Macklin Fitzpatrick, Lafayette, Fr., A, Dover, Mass./Avon Old Farms
* Fitzpatrick netted his first career hat trick in the Leopards’ loss to Army on Saturday afternoon.
* The rookie scored the first goal of the game and his next two goals help spark a four-goal run for the Leopards midway through the third quarter.

Tommy Schelling, Lehigh, So., A, Warren, N.J./Delbarton
* Schelling chipped in with four goals and three assists in the Mountain Hawks’ 15-10 triumph over Holy Cross last Saturday.
* For the season, Schelling leads the Mountain Hawks in goals (22), assists (11) and points (33).
 
Bailey Savio, Loyola, Jr., Face-Off Specialist, Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich
* Savio won better than 60 percent of faceoffs for the fifth game in a row for the Greyhounds, going 16 of 26 (.615) with 11 ground balls against No. 12 Duke University, a team that entered the weekend winning 57.6 percent of draws.
 
Ryan Kern, Navy, Sr., GK, Middletown, Del./Salesianum
* Kern produced a season-high 15 saves while facing 57 shots in the game, including 34 in the second half against Colgate.

Patrick Skalniak, Navy, Fr., M, Dallas, Texas/ The Episcopal School of Dallas
* Skalniak produced three points (two goals and an assist) in Navy’s 16-14 win over Colgate Saturday.
* The junior is one of four Navy players to score in all 5 contests this season, joining the starting attack of
Christian Daniel, Nick Cole and Perreten.
