BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Army West Point and Lehigh earned two awards each while Lafayette collected one in this week’s Patriot League GEICO men’s lacrosse awards, announced by the League on Monday.
Army West Point junior attack Brendan Nichtern was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate junior defender Marcus Hudgins earned defensive player of the week.
Lafayette attack Charlie Cunniffe collected rookie of the week, while Lehigh junior Mike Sisselberger and senior James Spence were named faceoff specialist and goalkeeper of the week, respectively.
Army West Point junior goalkeeper Wyatt Schupler and sophomore faceoff specialist Stevie Grabher, Boston University freshman midfielder Christian Quadrino, Bucknell freshman senior attack Tommy Sopko, Colgate senior attack Mike Hawkins and freshman midfielder Jacob Sposita, and Holy Cross junior goalie A.J. Fox all earned honorable mention.
Offensive Player of the Week
Brendan Nichtern, Army West Point, Jr., Attack, Massapequa, N.Y. /Massapequa
* Nichtern scored at least three goals for the third consecutive game and added three assists for six points in Army’s 12-10 win over Boston University on Saturday.
* The junior captain tops the offensive leader board for the Black Knights in both goals (13) and assists (12) for a team high 25 points. He is currently tied for 9
th nationally in assists per game (3) and 9
th in points per game (6.25).
Defensive Player of the Week
Marcus Hudgins, Army West Point, Jr., D, Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee (USMAPS)
* Hudgins recorded a season-high five caused turnovers and five ground balls in Army’s 12-10 win over Boston University on Saturday.
* The junior defenseman was key in helping the Black Knights’ defense to stifle the Terriers’ offense in the final 10 minutes of the game when Army was holding onto a one-goal lead.
* He is currently tied for 16
th nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.5).
Faceoff Specialist of the Week
Mike Sisselberger, Lehigh, Jr., FO, Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh
* Sisselberger won 16-of-19 faceoffs with 10 groundballs in Lehigh’s win over nationally ranked Loyola Maryland.
* The junior was 4-of-4 in the first quarter and 9-of-10 in the first half. He also scored a key third-quarter goal to put the Mountain Hawks ahead 8-3, rounding out Lehigh’s 6-1 run, which was the difference in the game.
* For the season, Sisselberger has won 78.0 percent of his faceoffs (32-of-41) with 20 ground balls.
Goalkeeper of the Week
James Spence, Lehigh, Sr., GK, Springfield, Pa./Springfield
* Spence tied a career-high 17 saves in Lehigh’s 10-6 win over No. 10 Loyola this past weekend.
* Sixteen of those stops came over the final three quarters, including some timely saves when the Greyhounds were trying to get back in the game.
Rookie of the Week
Charlie Cunniffe, Lafayette, Fr., A, Newtown Square, Pa./Episcopal Academy
* Cunniffe tallied six points in his collegiate debut on Saturday as part of an all-freshmen starting attack line for the Leopards.
* The freshman posted three goals and three assists with three ground balls and a caused turnover.
* His unit, alongside Peter Lehman (3g, 1a) and Carter Cecil (2g, 2a), combined for 14 points in their debuts at the college level.
Honorable Mentions
Wyatt Schupler, Army West Point, Jr., GK, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra
* Schupler notched a season-high 17 saves in net in Army’s 12-10 win over Boston University on Saturday.
* In the first period, Schupler recorded six saves on six shots faced to hold the Terriers scoreless while Army netted a five-goal advantage.
Stevie Grabher, Army West Point,
So., FO, Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore
* Grabher battled at the ‘X’ for the Black Knights in Saturday’s 12-10 victory over Boston University, winning 16-of-27 faceoffs. The sophomore also led with a team- and career-high 12 ground balls.
Christian Quadrino, Boston University, Fr., M, Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North
* Quadrino tallied two goals and one assist against No. 6 Army West Point on Saturday.
* Quadrino also added two ground balls. He now has seven goals and two assists for nine points this season.
Tommy Sopko, Bucknell, Sr., A, Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga
* Sopko scored seven goals and dished two assists in the team’s 15-9 win over Cleveland State on Sunday.
Mike Hawkins, Colgate, Sr., M, Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury
* Hawkins recorded his second four-goal game of the season in the 12-11 overtime win against Holy Cross.
* The senior added two assists for six points in Saturday's overtime win against Holy Cross.
* Three of Hawkins' goals were solo efforts, and he now leads the Raiders in both goals with 10 and assists with six.
Jacob Sposita, Colgate, Fr., M, Milford, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central
* Sposita scored the game-winning goal on a 40-foot shot as the horn sounded to end the first overtime, lifting Colgate to a 12-11 victory against Holy Cross.
* The OT tally capped Sposita's first multi-goal and multi-point game of his career, as he ended with two goals and one assist.
A.J. Fox, Holy Cross, Jr., GK, Bedford, N.H./Proctor Academy
* Fox posted 12 saves and caused the first two turnovers of his career and grabbed four groundballs in the second start of his career in the 12-11 overtime loss to Colgate.
