Patriot League Announces GEICO Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week (4.12.21)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh earned three of the five Patriot League GEICO men’s lacrosse weekly awards when they were announced by the League office on Monday. Army West Point received two weekly laurels.

Lehigh junior attack Tommy Schelling was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week. Teammate junior Mike Sisselberger collected faceoff specialist of the week for the second-straight week and freshman attack Scott Cole was named rookie of the week.

Army junior Marcus Hudgins garnered defensive player of the week while teammate junior Wyatt Schupler received goalkeeper of the week honors.

Army junior attack Aidan Byrnes, Boston University junior goalkeeper Matt Garber and sophomore attack Louis Perfetto, Bucknell senior defender Bryant Boswell and senior goalkeeper Ben Clark, Lehigh senior goalkeeper James Spence, and Loyola Maryland senior faceoff specialist Bailey Savio all earned honorable mentions.

Offensive Player of the Week
Tommy Schelling, Lehigh, Jr., A, Warren, N.J./Delbarton
* Schelling posted a team-high five points (three goals, two assists) in a 13-7 win over No. 19 Navy on Saturday.
* The junior helped spark an 8-1 Lehigh first-half run to turn a 1-0 deficit into an 8-2 halftime lead.
* He registered at least five points in five of six games this season, and now owns a team-leading 28 points on the season (13 goals, 15 assists).

Defensive Player of the Week
Marcus Hudgins, Army West Point, Jr., D, Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee (USMAPS)

* Hudgins had a team-high and season-best six ground balls and two caused turnovers in the 12-7 win over Loyola Maryland.
* He led an Army defense that held Loyola scoreless for more than 24 minutes in the second half and allowed only four goals in three quarters vs. the Greyhounds.

Faceoff Specialist of the Week 
Mike Sisselberger, Lehigh, Jr., FO/M, Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh
* The junior went 18-for-23 at the ‘X’ with 11 ground balls in the 13-7 win over Navy.
* Sisselberger won 4-of-5 faceoffs in the first quarter, 6-of-7 in the second, 3-of-5 in the third and 5-of-6 in the fourth against Navy.
* Sisselberger’s day at the ‘X’ helped the Mountain Hawks hold a 55-36 edge in shots.
* For the season, Sisselberger has won 108-of-139 faceoffs (77.7 percent) with 72 groundballs.

Goalkeeper of the Week 
Wyatt Schupler, Army West Point, Jr., GK, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra

* Schupler finished with 16 saves in Army's 12-7 win over No. 13 Loyola Maryland and had nine saves in the first half
* He helped Army hold Loyola scoreless for 24+ minutes and allowed Army to build up an 11-4 lead in the fourth quarter.
* He has tallied double-digit saves in six of seven games in 2021. 

Rookie of the Week 
Scott Cole, Lehigh, Fr., A, Reisterstown, Md./McDonogh
* Cole scored a goal for the sixth time in as many games while adding a career-high four groundballs as Lehigh earned a 13-7 win over Navy.
*His goal came with 1:27 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Aidan Byrnes, Army West Point, Jr., A, Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade
* Byrnes scored a career-high four goals in Army's 12-7 win over No. 13 Loyola on Saturday.

Matt Garber, Boston University, Jr., GK, Westport, Conn./Staples
* Garber made 13 saves and only allowed six even-strength goals in the Terriers’ 14-10 win at Colgate. Garber made five of his saves in the second quarter to help BU go on a 7-0 run to close out the first half.

Louis Perfetto, Boston University, So., F, Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset
* Perfetto notched a career-best six points by matching his career-high with four goals in addition to a pair of assists in the win over Colgate.
Bryant Boswell, Bucknell, Sr., D, Fredrick, Md./Georgetown Prep
* Boswell caused four turnovers and scooped up three ground balls in a strong defensive effort that held Lafayette to six goals.

Ben Clark, Bucknell, Sr., GK, Milton, Ga./Cambridge
* Clark made 12 saves and only allowed four goals in the team’s 14-6 win over Lafayette this past weekend.

James Spence, Lehigh, Sr., GK, Springfield, Pa./Springfield
* Spence had 14 saves, allowing just seven goals, in a 13-7 win over No. 19 Navy, to go with four ground balls.

Bailey Savio, Loyola Maryland, Sr., FO, Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich
* Savio faced three different faceoff specialists against Army West Point and won 15 of 22 (.681) draws while picking up 12 ground balls.
