BETHLEHEM, Pa — Army West Point and Navy split this year's six women's soccer major awards when the League office announced its postseason honors on Tuesday.
Army senior forward Erynn Johns was named offensive player of the year, while teammate senior Mia Padon earned defensive player of the year honors. Army senior goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia nabbed Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year for the second time.
Navy junior midfielder Victoria Tran received midfielder of the year, freshman defender Chloe Dawson collected rookie of the year honors and head coach Carin Gabarra was named coach of the year.
Eleven student-athletes were named to the first-team with 12 student-athletes on the second- and third-teams.
Army and Colgate led the way with seven overall all-League selections each, followed by Loyola Maryland (5) and Navy (4). Boston University, Lafayette and Lehigh all placed three on the all-League teams, followed by Bucknell (2) and Holy Cross (1).
The major awards and All-Patriot League teams were voted on by the 10 Patriot League women's soccer head coaches, who could not vote for their student-athletes or themselves.
2020-21 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year
Erynn Johns, Army West Point, Sr., F, Austin, Texas/Texas Rush
* Johns capped the regular season with two goals and one assist for a team-leading five points.
* The senior was named offensive player of the week on March 23 when she scored a career-best two goals in a 5-0 victory at American, in addition to one assist.
* In 56 career appearances for Army, Johns has scored nine goals and dished out 10 assists for 28 points.
* Johns was named to the Patriot League Women's Soccer All-Tournament team in 2018 and 2019.
2020-21 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year
Victoria Tran, Navy, Jr., M, Clarksville, Md./River Hill
* Tran led the team in points (8), goals (3) and assists (2) in eight games played this season.
* Tran received Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, April 12, after she scored just 26 seconds into the double-overtime draw against American in the last regular-season game.
* Tran was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region Third Team, the Patriot League All-Tournament Team and the All-League Second Team in 2019.
2020-21 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year
Mia Padon, Army West Point, Sr., D, Spokane, Wash./Spokane Sounders
* Padon helped back the defense, which held opponents to 0.40 goals per game as Army went 2-1 in the North Division.
* The senior defender aided in the Cadets' three shutouts on the year.
2020-21 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year
Sydney Cassalia, Army West Point, Sr., GK, Omaha, Neb./Elite Academy
* In four games in goal this season, Cassalia collected 13 saves for a .929 save percentage and posted a 0.24 goals-against average for the Black Knights.
* The senior owns a 23-25-13 record, 254 saves and 25 shutouts, to go along with a .724 save percentage and a 1.03 goals-against average in 61 career appearances.
* Cassalia was named the goalkeeper of the year in 2019, while earning US Soccer Coaches' All-North Region Second Team laurels.
2020-21 Patriot League Rookie of the Year
Chloe Dawson, Navy, Fr., D, Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson
* Dawson capped her freshman season with one goal (game-winner) and two assists for four points, as she appeared in seven contests.
* Dawson was named defensive player and rookie of the week on April 6 as she tallied points in both games against Bucknell and Lehigh in Navy's 2-0 week, and also led Navy's backline to allow just one goal in two games.
2020-21 Patriot League Coach of the Year
Carin Gabarra, Navy
* Gabarra led the Midshipmen to a 3-1-1 record in Patriot League play and a 3-0-1 mark in South Division play.
* In her 28th year at the helm, Gabarra also guided the team to the top seed in the South Division of the Patriot League Championship.
* Gabarra is now a five-time Patriot League coach of the year ('96, '06, '12, '17, '21).
