No. 1 Lehigh and No. 2 Army West Point Advance to Patriot League Baseball Championship Series (5.16.21)

Two-time defending champion Black Knights return to the championship series; Mountain Hawks advance for the first time since 2015

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 1 Lehigh (23-17) and No. 2 Army West Point (26-22) advanced to the Patriot League Baseball Championship Series after the semifinal round on Sunday.
 
The top-seeded Mountain Hawks shutout No. 4 Navy (17-15), 5-0, in game three of their series behind a three-run home run from Patriot League Player of the Year Casey Rother. The two-time defending Patriot League Champion Black Knights defeated No. 3 Lafayette (14-17), 7-3, led by three-RBI performances from sophomore shortstop Kevin Dubrule and junior catcher Cam Cerruto.
 
The Mountain Hawks will host the 2021 Patriot League Baseball Championship Series at J. David Walker Field at Legacy Park in Bethlehem, Pa. Game one of the best two-of-three game series is scheduled for Wednesday, May 26, with game two on Thursday, May 27. Game three, if necessary, will be played on Friday, May 28. The first pitch for all three games is set for 2 p.m. with live coverage of each on ESPN+.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior left fielder Casey Rother, the Patriot League Player of the Year, hit a three-run home run during a five-run third inning to lead Lehigh to a 5-0 victory over Navy. The win clinched Lehigh's spot in the Patriot League Championship Series for the first time since 2015.
*Rother’s three-run shot was followed by an RBI double from freshman designated hitter Andrew Nole and a bases-loaded walk drawn by freshman shortstop Riley Davis during an inning that saw the Mountain Hawks bring 11 batters to the plate.
*Junior left-handed pitcher Luke Rettig tossed 7.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out eight to earn the series-clinching win.
*Sophomore left fielder Colin Smith went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the Mids’ offense.
*Freshman right-handed pitcher Zach Powers tossed 5.0 scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out three for Navy.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore shortstop Kevin Dubrule went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Army West Point to a 7-3 victory over Lafayette, clinching a spot in the Patriot League Baseball Championship Series for the third-straight season.
*Senior right-handed pitcher Ray Bartoli earned the victory for the two-time defending champion Black Knights, giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits through 8.1 innings.
*Junior centerfielder Hunter Meade went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and junior catcher Cam Cerruto went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in the series-clinching victory.
*Lafayette junior catcher Dylan Minghini led the Leopards, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
*Dubrule and freshman left fielder Sam Ruta each drove in a run in the first inning to put the Black Knights in front 2-0.
*Minghini’s RBI single cut the lead in half in the top of the second inning, but Dubrule drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to extend Army West Point’s lead to 4-1.
*Minghini answered in the top of the sixth inning for Lafayette, hitting a triple to right field to drive in a run, making the score 4-2.
*Cerruto hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Black Knights an insurmountable 7-2 lead.
*Lafayette senior left fielder Colin Hartey continued his hot hitting for the series with a solo home run in the seventh inning, but it was the last offense the Leopards could muster. Hartey hit a team-high .545 (6-for-11) in the series.
