Patriot League GEICO Men’s Basketball Players of the Week Announced (11.21.22)

Colgate’s Richardson and Army West Point’s Benson collect weekly honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Colgate senior guard Tucker Richardson received Patriot League GEICO Men’s Basketball Player of the Week when the League office announced the first set of weekly accolades on Monday. Army West Point freshman guard Coleton Benson captured rookie of the week.

Richardson collected GEICO Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time in his career after averaging 20.0 points, 6.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals during the Raiders’ 1-1 week. He scored a career-high 30 points in an 80-68 victory at Syracuse last week.
 
Benson captured GEICO Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week after averaging 17.3 points and shooting 58 percent (18-for-31) from the floor, and 53 percent (10-for-19) from 3-point range in the Black Knights’ three games last week.
 
American sophomore guard Elijah Stephens, Army West Point senior forward Chris Mann, Holy Cross senior forward Gerrale Gates, Lafayette senior forward Leo O’Boyle and Navy senior guard Christian Jones received honorable mentions for their performances last week.
 
The Patriot League men’s basketball players of the week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL GEICO PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tucker Richardson, Colgate, Sr., G, Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central
*Richardson averaged 20.0 points, 6.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals to help Colgate go 1-1 last week, including an 80-68 victory at Syracuse.
*He scored a career-high 30 points, connecting on 10-of-16 from the field and 8-of-13 from beyond the arc against the Orange. He helped the Raiders set a Dome record with 19 made 3-pointers.
*The League’s preseason player and defensive player of the year finished with 10 points and a career-high nine assists in a loss against Duquesne.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL GEICO ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Coleton Benson, Army West Point, Fr., G, Austin, Texas/Bowie
*Benson averaged 17.3 points while shooting 58 percent (18-for-31) from the floor, and 53 percent (10-for-19) from 3-point range through three games last week.
*The freshman guard scored a career-high 21 points on 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc, while adding three rebounds and three assists in a 96-94 win against Siena.
*He finished with 16 points against William & Mary and 15 against Radford in a pair of losses.

Elijah Stephens, American, So., G, Waco, Texas/China Spring
*Stephens averaged 14.0 points, 5.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals to help American go 2-0 last week with wins over William & Mary and NJIT. He scored 14 points and dished out a season-high six assists in a 71-64 victory over the Tribe.
 
Chris Mann, Army West Point, Sr., F, Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg
*Mann averaged 18.3 points while shooting 56.7 percent (21-of-37) in three games last week, including a win at Siena. He scored a season-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting against Radford on Sunday.
 
Gerrale Gates, Holy Cross, Sr., F, Charlotte, N.C./David W. Butler
*Gates averaged 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in losses against No. 10 Creighton and Stonehill last week. He totaled 22 points and a season-best 11 boards against the Skyhawks.  
 
Leo O’Boyle, Lafayette, Sr., F, Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep
*O’Boyle averaged 14.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in three games last week, including a 22-point performance against UMBC. He also finished with 16 points and five boards in the Leopards’ win over Central Connecticut State.  
 
Christian Jones, Navy, Sr., G, Bowie, Md./Annapolis
*Jones averaged 13.3 points and 4.7 rebounds to help Navy go 2-1 last week with wins over UC San Diego and Youngstown State. He finished with 17 points and six boards in the Mids’ 78-69 win against the Tritons.
