Third-Seeded Lehigh Claims Patriot League Field Hockey Title (11.5.22)

Mountain Hawks earn first League title since 1994 in overtime thriller

WASHINGTON – Third-seeded Lehigh (13-7, 4-2 PL) outlasted No. 1 Boston University (10-9, 5-1 PL) in a 2-1 overtime victory at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex on Saturday afternoon to claim their first Patriot League title since 1994. 
 
Sophomore defender Guusje Hogendoorn scored the overtime game-winner on a penalty corner to secure the Mountain Hawks’ victory and a berth in the NCAA DI Field Hockey Championship. Senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn made 12 saves in the victory to earn Patriot League Championship MVP honors and a spot on the all-tournament team along with Hogendoorn, senior midfielder Sarah Bonthuis and junior midfielder Julia Gatelein.  
 
Boston University graduate student midfielder Casey Thompson scored the Terriers’ lone goal and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. She was joined by teammates senior goalkeeper Caroline Kelly and senior midfielder Rachel Borzymowski. 
 
American junior goalkeeper Bryn Underwood and senior defender Charllene Boshoff, Bucknell senior midfielder Kayla Kisthardt and freshman defender Kira Leclercq were also selected to the all-tournament team. 
 
Lehigh and head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer will learn their postseason fate on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 10 p.m. when the bracket is announced during the 2022 NCAA DI Field Hockey Tournament Selection Show, streamed live on NCAA.com.

WASHINGTON – Lehigh sophomore defender Guusje Hogendoorn scored the overtime game-winner on a penalty corner, converting the assist from senior Sydney White to lift the Mountain Hawks to a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Boston University for their first Patriot League title since 1994.
*Mountain Hawks’ senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn received Patriot League Championship MVP honors, making 12 saves and allowing one goal in the title game.
*The Terriers controlled possession in the first quarter taking nine shots, including five on goal, but Lehigh’s Kahn made four saves to help keep the game in a scoreless tie.
*Lehigh put pressure on Boston University’s backline in the second quarter, outshooting the Terriers 8-1, but senior goalkeeper Caroline Kelly made six saves during the period to send the game into halftime tied at zero. She finished the game with eight saves.
*Boston University graduate student midfielder Casey Thompson broke the scoreless tie in the third quarter when she tapped in a feed from Patriot League Rookie of the Year Martu Coulo at the 41:45 mark.
*Lehigh first-year forward Maddie Kandra answered at the 49:09 mark in the fourth quarter on an assist from senior midfielder Sarah Bonthuis to send the game to overtime.
*The Mountain Hawks won their second game of the tournament after regulation, as Hogendoorn finished the penalty corner at the 67:14 mark of the first overtime period.
