Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Academic Honors Announced

Navy’s Brady and Army West Point’s Halfhill claim scholar-athlete of the year honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Navy senior Brett Brady and Army West Point sophomore Joanna Halfhill were selected as the 2022 Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athletes of the Year when the League office announced honors on Wednesday.
 
Brady and Halfhill were also selected to the eight- and seven-member Academic All-Patriot League men’s and women’s squads.
 
Six men’s and women’s cross-country student-athletes are multiple-time Academic All-Patriot League honorees. Lafayette senior Robert Oehrlein (mechanical engineering, 3.86 GPA), a three-time All-League honoree, made the Academic All-League team for the third time. Brady, American senior Russell Sullivan (philosophy & political science, 3.93 GPA) and Loyola Maryland senior Nathan Galloway (Honors English & global studies, 3.914 GPA) were two-time academic team selections on the men’s side.
 
Army West Point junior Georgia Jones (law & legal studies, 4.00 GPA) and Holy Cross senior Eve Feuerbach (interdisciplinary studies, 3.73 GPA) were both repeat selections on the women’s academic team.
 
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in their sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
 
2022 Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Brett Brady, Navy, Sr., Phoenix, Ariz./Butler Area (Pa.)
*Brady earned First Team All-Patriot League honors for the second-consecutive season by finishing fourth with an 8,050-meter time of 24:46.0.  
*The two-time Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year is an aerospace engineering major at the U.S. Naval Academy with a cumulative GPA of 3.89.
*He earned Academic All-League honors for cross country, indoor and outdoor track, in addition to being selected a 2022 CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team honoree last season.
 
2022 Patriot League Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Joanna Halfhill, Army West Point, So. Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington
*Halfhill earned First Team All-Patriot League honors at the 2022 League championship by finishing sixth with a 5,950-meter time of 21:14.2.
*The Mansfield, Ohio native is a physics major at the U.S. Military Academy with a 4.293 cumulative GPA
*Including the League championship meet, the sophomore recorded four top-10 finishes during her second season at Army West Point.
 
Twelve All-League Honorees Earn Academic Recognition
Six of the seven Women’s Cross Country Academic All-Patriot League squad members earned All-League honors at the 2022 championship, highlighted by Navy junior Emily Boutin (English, 3.67), the individual champion. Feuerbach, Halfhill and Jones all received first-team honors. Boston University graduate student Meghan Convery (communications, 3.63 GPA) and Bucknell senior Mia Bellucci (political science & economics, 4.0 GPA) made the second team.
 
Six of the eight members of the Academic All-Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Team received All-League honors at the 2022 championship, led by Navy junior Sam Keeney (mechanical engineering, 3.23 GPA), who finished second overall. Brady and Army West Point senior Matthew Porter (international affairs, 3.552 GPA) made the first team. Sullivan, Oehrlein and Lehigh senior Tyler French (materials science & engineering, 3.78 GPA) all made the second team.
 
Nine Student-Athletes Make Cross Country Academic Squad for the First Time
Halfhill highlights a list of nine first-time Academic All-Patriot League Cross Country selections, including five on the women’s team. Halfhill is joined by Bellucci, Boutin, Convery and Lehigh junior Christina Yakaboski (economics, 3.95 GPA). French, Keeny, Porter and Boston University graduate student Aksel Laudon (biomedical engineering/medical school, 4.0 GPA)  round out the four first-time honorees on the men’s side.
 
Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
