BALTIMORE - The fifth-ranked and sixth-seeded Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team gave up just one second-half goal as the Greyhounds ran away with an 18-8 win over No. 10 James Madison in the second round of the NCAA Championships Sunday afternoon at Ridley Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Greyhounds (20-1) record their first 20-win season in program history and will be making their first appearance in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament since 2015.
Graduate student
Livy Rosenzweig led all players with 13 draw controls in the contest to move her career total to 401 and break the program's all-time career draw control record that was previously set by All-American Taylor VanThof at 392 from 2016-19. She's also become just the second player in Patriot League history to break the 400-draw control mark.
Senior
Jillian Wilson assisted on the draw, winning five to move her season total to 125, which ranks second in Loyola's all-time single-season records.
Offensively, graduate student
Sam Fiedler led the way with a season-high five goals and one assist for six points. Rosenzweig also dished out six assists to share game-high honors of six points.
Freshman
Georgia Latch contributed five points on one goal and four assists, while graduate student
Elli Kluegel (3g) and sophomore
Sydni Black (3g, 1a) each tacked on a hat trick. Senior
Jillian Wilson finished with two goals and two assists, freshman
Chase Boyle contributed two goals and one assist and junior
Catie Corolla had two goals.
For James Madison (14-5), Katelyn Morgan led the way with four points on two goals and two assists.
The Dukes opened the scoring at the 13:03 mark, but the Greyhounds answered by stringing together six-straight goals and they never looked back. Fiedler, Latch, Corolla and Kluegel all scored, respectively, before back-to-back goals from Wilson gave Loyola a 6-1 lead at the 4:15 mark of the first quarter. The Dukes halted the run with consecutive goals to cut their deficit to three at the end of the first 15 minutes, but Fieder and Kluegel got the goals back to open the second quarter, stretching Loyola leads back to five, at 8-3, with 11:25 to go in the first half.
The Dukes got another pair of goals at 8:11 and 7:27, but the Greyhound scored three of the next four goals to regain the five-goal advantage, 11-6, with 2:03 to play in the half. James Madison's goal with 53 seconds before the break send them into the intermission with a four-goal deficit, 11-7
Black, Latch and Fiedler combined for the first three goals of the second half, with Latch assisting Black and then Fiedler before Black assisted Fiedler to give Loyola a 14-7 lead with 7:39 to play in the third quarter. James Madison's lone second half goal came at the six-minute mark, before Boyle closed out the scoring in the stanza with a strike at 2:46.
Fourth-quarter goals from Fiedler, Black and Kluegel closed out the scoring and accounted for the 18-8 final.
The Greyhounds will now travel to No. 3 seed Boston College for a chance to advance to the final four for the first time since 2003. The quarterfinal round will be played on Thursday, May 19 with a game time TBD.
