BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Boston University led the way with three major award winners when the Patriot League announced its major annual men's lacrosse awards on Monday. Army West Point, Bucknell and Lehigh recorded one major laurel each.
Army senior Brendan Nichtern was named offensive player of the year for the second-straight season.
Lehigh senior faceoff specialist Mike Sisselberger received the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Faceoff Specialist of the Year honor for the second consecutive season.
BU junior long-stick midfielder Roy Meyer nabbed defensive player of the year, senior goalkeeper Matt Garber garnered goalkeeper of the year and head coach Ryan Polley was named the League's Coach of the Year.
Bucknell freshman attack Connor Davis rounded out the major awards as the rookie of the year.
The All-League teams are comprised of 16 student-athletes on both the first team and the second team. Of the 32 players that made the teams, there are 14 seniors, seven juniors, six graduate students, four sophomores, and one freshman.
BU led the way with the most first-team selections with five, followed by Lehigh (3), Army, Loyola Maryland and Navy all placed two each. Colgate and Holy Cross earned one spot apiece on the first team.
Loyola placed eight total student-athletes on the All-League teams, followed by Boston with seven, and Army and Lehigh each had five honorees each. Colgate and Navy had two student-athletes apiece, while Bucknell, Holy Cross and Lafayette rounded out the all-League squads with one student-athlete each.
The Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Championship quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 3. No. 3 Loyola Maryland will host No. 6 Bucknell at 3 p.m., while No. 4 Lehigh will host No. 5 Navy at 7 p.m. Both quarterfinal round games will be available live on
ESPN+.
BU will play the lowest remaining seed on Friday, May 6 at 4 p.m. at Nickerson Field. No. 2 Army West Point will play the highest remaining seed at 7 p.m. The semifinals and championship game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network. Dave Ryan and Evan Washburn will be on the call for all three games.
The Major Awards and All-League teams were voted on by the nine Patriot League head coaches who could not vote for their student-athletes or themselves.
2022 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year
Brendan Nichtern, Army West Point, Sr., Attack, Massapequa, N.Y. /Massapequa
2022 Stats: 35 goals, 51 assists, 86 points, 18 ground balls, eight caused turnovers
* The two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, Nichtern finished the regular season averaging 2.50 goals per game, while leading the League in assists per game (3.64) and points per game (6.14).
* Nichtern's assists and points per game both rank second in the nation.
* The senior has scored 110 goals and dished out 159 assists for 269 points to go along with 66 ground balls in his career at Army.
2022 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year
Roy Meyer, Boston University, Jr., LSM, Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade
2022 Stats: one goal, three assists, four points, 63 ground balls, 43 caused turnovers
* Meyer wrapped the regular season picking up 63 ground balls and a team-leading 43 caused turnovers in 14 appearances. His caused turnovers mark is a single-season program record.
* He averaged 3.07 caused turnovers per game this season to rank first in the nation.
* The four-time defensive player of the week scored one goal and dished three assists for four points.
2022 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Faceoff Specialist of the Year
Mike Sisselberger, Lehigh, Sr., Faceoff Specialist, Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh
2022 Stats: 193-of-309 at the 'X', 114 ground balls, one goal
* The senior has recorded a 62.5 percent in faceoff wins (193-of-309) this season.
* Sisselberger, the defending Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year, averaged a League and program-leading 8.77 ground balls per game in 13 games this season.
* He was named the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Faceoff Specialist of the Week three times this season to increase his League record to nine in his career.
2022 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Goalkeeper of the Year
Matt Garber, Boston University, Sr., GK, Westport, Conn./Staples
2022 Stats:
10-4 record, 10.24 goals-against average, 165 saves, .543 save percentage
* Garber finished his fourth regular season as a Terrier averaging 11.79 saves per game, good for third in the conference.
* His .543 save percentage ranks first in the League, while his 10.24 goals-against average is third-best.
* The senior was named goalkeeper of the week three times this season.
2022 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year
Connor Davis, Bucknell, Fr., A, Bethesda, Md./Bullis School
2022 Stats: 44 goals, seven assists, 51 points, 26 ground balls, four caused turnovers
* Davis ended his first collegiate regular season with a League-leading 44 goals, plus seven assists for 51 points in 13 games.
* The freshman ranks first in the conference and tied for third in NCAA Division averaging 3.58 goals per game.
* Davis collected rookie weekly honors for a League-record six times this season.
The William Lawson Coach of the Year
Ryan Polley, Boston University
* BU Head Coach Ryan Polley led the Terriers to a 7-1 League mark and a 10-4 overall record for his second Patriot League Coach of the Year honor.
* Polley led the team to their first Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Regular-Season title and the No. 1 seed in the championship. This is the fifth-straight year BU earned a berth in the postseason.
* A program-record five Terriers earned First Team All-Patriot League honors under Polley's leadership, including this year's defensive player of the year and goalkeeper of the year.
