Patriot League Announces Women’s Soccer Players of the Week (8.29.22)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Loyola Maryland and Boston University combined to sweep the women’s soccer weekly awards when announced on Monday.
 
Loyola’s Sarah Mirr won Midfielder of the week, Alex Searing earned Defensive Player of the week, and Paige Sim rounded out the Greyhounds’ honorees by earning the goalkeeper award. Mirr and Searing each scored in the 4-0 win against Youngstown State, while Sim totaled 17 saves across two games, one being on a penalty kick.
 
BU forward Abigail McNulty was named Patriot League Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Gulianna Gianino earned Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row. Both McNulty and Gianino scored goals against UMass Lowell, and McNulty followed up with another goal and an assist against the ninth-ranked University of Michigan.   
 
American sophomore Julia Kato and junior Izzy Kadzban, Bucknell junior Jenna Hall, Lehigh senior Ryelle Shuey, and Loyola junior Kelly Hutton earned honorable mentions.

Offensive Player of the Week
Abigail McNulty, Boston University, Junior, Forward, Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional
* McNulty totaled five points this week with two goals and an assist to help BU to a 1-1 record.
* McNulty scored her first goal of the season against UMass Lowell in the 20th minute.
 * She had another goal and one assist in BU’s second game against No. 9 in the nation University of Michigan. 

Midfielder of the Week 
Sarah Mirr, Loyola Maryland, GR., Midfield, Pleasanton, Ca./Foothill High
* Mirr played a big part in both shutout wins for Loyola this weekend, playing 155 total minutes.
*She scored against Youngstown State, taking a long shot outside the penalty box that landed in the top left corner of the goal.

Defensive Player of the Week
Alex Searing, Loyola Maryland, Senior, Defense, Allentown, N.J. /Allentown High

* Searing played a crucial part in the Greyhounds’ two shutouts this weekend against Rice and Youngstown.
* She scored in the game against the Youngstown Penguins and helped them to their 4-0 win.   
 
Goalkeeper of the Week 
Paige Sim, Loyola Maryland, Senior, Goalkeeper, Phoenix, Ariz. /Desert Vista
* Sim had nine saves against the Owls and eight saves against the Penguins this weekend.
* Her last save against Youngstown was on a penalty kick to help the Greyhounds to a 4-0 win.
 
Rookie of the Week
Gulianna Gianino, Boston University, Freshmen, Midfield, Norwell, Mass. /Norwell High
*Gianino continued her strong first-year showing by scoring her second goal of the season against UMass Lowell.
* She is currently tied for the team lead in goals for the season.   
 
Honorable Mentions

* Kato had her first shutout of the season, totaling five saves to help the Eagles to a 1-0 win over South Florida.
 
Izzy Kadzban, American, Junior, Forward/Midfield, Longwood, Fla./Lake Mary
* Kadzban score the lone goal in the Eagles’ 1-0 win against the University of South Florida.
 
Jenna Hall, Bucknell, Junior, Goalkeeper, Huger, S.C./Miss Porter’s School
* Hall made her 2022 debut this weekend with her ninth career shutout against the Air Force after missing the first two games to injury.  
 
Ryelle Shuey, Lehigh, Senior, Centerback, Schafferstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County
* Shuey scored Lehigh’s second goal of the game against Drexel off of a header on an assist by Mattie Murphy.
 
Kelly Hutton, Loyola Maryland, Junior, Forward, Skippack, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy
* Hutton netted two goals in the Greyhounds’ game against Youngstown State to help their 4-0 win.
