Patriot League Announces Women’s Soccer Players of the Week (9.05.22)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — American and Army West Point combined to take home four of the five awards as the League announced the winners on Monday. Lehigh received one winner.  
 
Giuliana Capraro and Julia Kato from American earned defensive player and goalkeeper of the week for their efforts toward the two Eagles’ shutout against George Washington and William & Mary.   
 
Army freshmen Brigid Duffy earned rookie of the week for her assist pass to offensive player of the week winner Elise Urkov.
 
Lehigh senior midfielder Julianna Bonner was named the midfielder of the week after scoring her first goal of the season against Delaware.
 
Lafayette freshmen Katrina Santelli, Loyola senior Alex Searing and sophomore Baylee De Smit, and Navy senior Olivia Foster and junior Mattie Gallagher earned honorable mentions.

* Urkov netted Army’s goal in the 1-1 draw against No. 25 Samford to end the week with two points.

Midfielder of the Week 
Julianna Bonner, Lehigh, Senior, Midfield, Elliott City, Md./Wide Lake High
*  Bonner scored her first goal of the season in Lehigh’s tie against Delaware.
*  The senior’s goal came off a header in the 51st minute with the assist from freshman Sophia Lis.

Defensive Player of the Week
Giuliana Capraro, American, Sophomore, Defense, North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard

* Capraro anchored a defensive squad that helped the Eagles to maintain two shutouts this week against GWU and William & Mary
* The sophomore has helped allow no goals for the last three games for the Eagles this season.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week 
Julia Kato, American, Sophomore, Goalkeeper, Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal
*  Kato recorded two shutout games this week with 0-0 ties against George Washington and William & Mary.
*  Kata now has six career shutouts, including one in the last three of the Eagles’ games.
 
Rookie of the Week
Brigid Duffy, Army West Point, Freshmen, Midfield, Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury High
* Duffy provided the assist in Army’s tie against No. 25 Samford.
* Her through ball pass to Elise Urkov put the Black Knights ahead 1-0 in the 74th minute and earned Duffy her first career point.

Grace Poncsak, Colgate, Senior, Goalkeeper, Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty
* Poncsak had five saves to help the Raiders to a 0-0 tie against Canisius.
 
Katrina Santelli, Lafayette, Freshmen, Forward, Pepper Pike, Ohio/Hathaway Brown
* Santelli had her first career goal in the 1-1 draw against NJIT.
 
Alex Searing, Loyola Maryland, Senior, Defense, Allentown, N.J./ Allentown High
* Searing contributed to Loyola’s shutout against Kent State and scored a goal against Columbia.
 
Baylee De Smit, Loyola Maryland, Sophomore, Forward, Towson, Md./McDonough High
* De Smit tallied one goal and one assist in the game against Columbia.
 
Olivia Foster, Navy, Senior, Defense, Brighton Mich./Hartland
* Foster scored the game-winning goal in the Midshipmen’s 1-0 win against Fairleigh Dickinson.
 
Mattie Gallagher, Navy, Junior, Goalkeeper, Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area High
* Gallagher tied her season high with six saves in both games this past week and registered a .857 save percentage.
