BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh and Loyola Maryland each earned two of the five Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse weekly awards while Bucknell earned one, as the League announced the award winners on Monday.
Lehigh senior attack Christian Mule’ was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week. Teammate graduate student faceoff specialist Mike Sisselberger earned faceoff specialist of the week.
Loyola graduate student Matt Hughes received defensive player of the week while junior goalkeeper Luke Staudt was named goalkeeper of the week.
Bucknell freshman midfielder Will Hopkins rounded out the awards as rookie of the week.
Army West Point senior faceoff specialist Will Coletti, Boston University senior long-stick midfielder Roy Meyer, Lafayette freshman midfielder Jack Irish, Lehigh junior goalkeeper Nick Pecora, Loyola Maryland senior midfielder Evan James and Navy junior attack Xavier Arline and freshman attack Mac Haley earned honorable mentions.
The Patriot League men’s lacrosse players of the week are selected in a vote by each school’s sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.
Loyola Defeats Top-Ranked Maryland
The Loyola Maryland Greyhounds recorded a 12-7 win over No. 1 Maryland this past Saturday to snap the Terrapin’s 19-game winning streak. The win marked the first for Loyola over a team ranked in the USILA Poll since 2007 when they beat Duke, 8-7. Senior midfielder Evan James (2g, 1a), junior attack Davis Lindsey (1g, 2a) and junior midfield Seth Higgins (1g, 2a) all finished with three points for Loyola. Sophomore long-stick midfielder Diego Roman forced three turnovers, and junior goalkeeper Luke Staudt made 19 saves and had two caused turnovers.
Offensive Player of the Week
Christian Mule’, Lehigh, Sr., A, Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West
* Mule’ tied his career-high of 10 points on Saturday, with six assists and four goals in a 20-10 win over Fairfield.
* He also had two caused turnovers and collected two ground balls.
Defensive Player of the Week
Matt Hughes, Loyola Maryland, Gr., Reston, Va./South Lakes H.S.
* Hughes marked Maryland Preseason All-American Owen Murphy who scored four goals in the Terrapins’ season opener, holding Murphy scoreless on five shots in Loyola’s 12-7 win.
* Hughes also had five ground balls and a caused turnover for the Greyhounds as Loyola forced 22 Maryland turnovers.
* The defender had an assist on a fourth-quarter goal by Matthew Minicus.
Faceoff Specialist of the Week
Mike Sisselberger, Lehigh, Gr., FO, Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh
* Sisselberger went 19-of-30 at the X against Fairfield in the Mountain Hawks’ 20-10 win while picking up 12 ground balls.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Luke Staudt, Loyola Maryland, Jr., GK, Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee H.S.
* Staudt made his second collegiate start and posted 19 saves to go with a .731 save percentage against No. 1 Maryland in a 12-7 victory.
* His 19 saves are the most by a Loyola player since Jacob Stover had the same number in the 2019 NCAA Quarterfinals against Penn State.
* Staudt posted six saves in the first quarter and nine in the opening half; he then finished the game with seven saves in the fourth quarter against the Terrapins.
Rookie of the Week
Will Hopkins, Bucknell, Fr., M, Severna Park, Md./St. Mary’s
* Hopkins registered a hat trick and finished with four points against Robert Morris.
* His four points match a season-high tally from last week, while his three goals mark a season-high.
Honorable Mentions
Will Coletti, Army West Point, So., FO, Monrovia, Md./Linganore
* Coletti won 12-of-21 faceoffs against Massachusetts. Coletti went on to score on his lone shot attempt while assisting on a goal. Coletti also grabbed a team-high ten ground balls.
Roy Meyer, Boston University, Sr., LSM, Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade
* Meyer, the League’s preseason defensive player of the year, led the Terriers with five caused turnovers and eight ground balls against Vermont. The senior also scored a goal on his only shot of the day during the Terriers’ fourth-quarter rally.
Jack Irish, Lafayette, Fr., M, Berwyn, Pa./Malvern Prep
* The rookie led the Leopards with two goals and one assist in the loss to No. 12 Delaware. Irish took five shots with two on goal and gathered one ground ball.
Nick Pecora, Lehigh, Jr., GK, Congers, N.Y./Deerfield Academy
* In his first collegiate start, Pecora finished with 12 saves and allowed just three goals in the second half in the team’s 20-10 win versus Fairfield.
Henry Haberman, Loyola Maryland, Fr., Port Washington, N.Y./Port Washington
* In his first collegiate start, Haberman scored twice in Loyola’s 12-7 win over No. 1 Maryland.
Evan James, Loyola Maryland, Sr., Midfield, Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman H.S.
* James led the Greyhounds with three goals on three shots, in Loyola’s 12-7 opening-season win over No. 1 Maryland.
Xavier Arline, Navy, Jr., A, Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River
* Arline produced a career-high seven points that included career bests in goals (3) and assists (4) in Navy's road win at Hofstra.
Mac Haley, Navy, Fr., A, Shady Side, Md./St. John's College (HS)
* Haley turned in a career-high three points, including a personal-best two goals in Navy's road win at Hofstra. He scored what proved to be the game-winner with 3:44 remaining in the contest off an assist from Max Hewitt.
