Patriot League 2023 Swimming and Diving Championship Day One Recap (2.15.22)

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Navy men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs hold the lead after day one of the 2023 Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium.
 
Navy’s women’s team (sophomore Megan Murphy, junior Riley Gavigan, sophomore Caroline Irwin, and junior Maya Novack) took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.24. Loyola Maryland junior Lily Mead, freshman Paige Simko, freshman Michela Schultz, and sophomore Charley Tulio placed second with a time of 1:40.33. Bucknell’s relay team, comprised of junior Esme Hunter, senior Alexandra Ritorto, senior Sabrina Vumbacco, and senior Sophia Donati placed third (1:41.88).

The Midshipmen took first place in the men’s 200-yard medley as the team of junior Pat Colwell, senior Jackson Schultz, junior Jonah Harm, and sophomore Austin Lockhart recorded a time of 1:25.34. Loyola’s relay team (freshman Teddy Cross, senior Max Verheyen, sophomore Patrick Hayburn, and sophomore Owen Harlow) finished second with a time of 1:26.66. Army West Point’s men’s 200-yard medley team made up of sophomore Alex Edwards, freshman Kohen Rankin, senior Jacob Powell, and sophomore Owen Harlow finished third in 1:26.73.

Navy’s divers took first, second and third place in the men’s three-meter diving finals. Blakeman Shaw took first place with a score of 363.35. Teammates junior George Moore and freshman Anthony Sciulli earned second (352.75) and third place (348.70), respectively.

Navy’s 800-yard freestyle women’s relay team with junior Cameron Horner, junior Gabi Baldwin, freshman Lauren Walsh, and sophomore Tiffany Shields finished first with a time of 7:11.91. Army’s women’s relay team of sophomore Clara Williams, junior Melinda Zhang, freshman Molly Webber, and freshman Kira Macmullan claimed silver with a time of 7:12.00 for an Academy record, followed by Bucknell in third (freshman Jennifer Bolden, junior Abby Doss, junior Caroline McGann, and Vumbacco) with a time of 7:18.59.
 
Navy topped the podium in the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay finishing in 6:22.42 for the meet record. The winning relay team was comprised of sophomore Everet Andrew, Lockhart, sophomore Conor Cranfield, and junior Garrett McGovern. Army West Point senior Tanner Falls, sophomore Wes Tate, junior Ian Tansill, and senior Sean Dwyer placed second in a time of 6:25.49 for an academy record. Bucknell senior Christian Stef, freshman Shane Wynne, sophomore Andry Dorsel, and sophomore Christopher Kopac recorded a time of 6:31.17 to come in third place.
 
Day two of the Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships will begin Thursday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m. Live coverage of the 2023 Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships will be available each day on ESPN+.
