Patriot League Baseball Players of the Week Announced (5.2.23)

Bucknell, Lehigh and Holy Cross claim weekly awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bucknell, Lehigh and Holy Cross each claimed one Patriot League baseball weekly award when the League office announced honors on Tuesday.
 
Bucknell sophomore third baseman Sean Keys collected his third Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week after driving in eight runs to help the Bison go 3-0-1 last week, including a three-game sweep over Holy Cross.
 
The Mountain Hawks’ graduate student LHP Luke Rettig received Patriot League Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after tossing a two-hit, 7.0-inning complete-game shutout in a 1-0 victory against Navy. He also became Lehigh’s career strikeout leader (269) with 11 strikeouts against the Mids.
 
Holy Cross freshman right fielder Jack Toomey was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the third time this season after batting .529 (9-for-17) with one home run and six RBIs in four games last week.
 
Army West Point senior RHP Robbie Buecker and senior 1B Ross Friedrick, Holy Cross sophomore 1B Chris Baillargeon, Navy senior OF Nick Burch and senior RHP Reece Early all earned honorable mentions for their performances last week.
 
Patriot League Baseball Championship Field Coming into Focus
Army West Point claimed its second-consecutive Patriot League regular-season title and will be the No. 1 seed when the 2023 Patriot League Baseball Championship begins later this month. Bucknell sealed the No. 2 seed in the championship with a 7-5 victory over Holy Cross on Monday. Navy will be the No. 3 seed in the four-team championship field after recording a 14-1 win over Lehigh on Monday.
 
Lafayette’s magic number to clinch the No. 4 seed in the 2023 Patriot League Championship is one, entering the final weekend of the regular season. The Leopards could seal their postseason fate with one more win or one loss by Lehigh.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sean Keys, Bucknell, So., 3B, Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields
*Keys batted .385 (5-for-13) while slugging 1.000 and reaching base at a .529 clip to help Bucknell go 3-0-1 last week, including a three-game sweep over Holy Cross.
*The sophomore third baseman hit two home runs and doubled twice while driving in eight runs in four games.
*He combined to go 4-for-6 with two doubles, one home run, five RBIs and two runs scored in the Bison’s last two wins against the Crusaders.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Luke Rettig, Lehigh, Gr., LHP, Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area
*Rettig threw a two-hit shutout through 7.0-complete innings in Mountain Hawks’ 1-0 victory over Navy on Saturday.
*The graduate student left-hander struck out 11 Mids to become Lehigh’s career leader in strikeouts (269) heading into the seasons’ final weekend.
*He is tied for the Patriot League lead in wins (6) and strikeouts (62).
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Jack Toomey, Holy Cross, Fr., RF, Wellesley, Mass./St. Sebastian’s
*Toomey batted .529 (9-for-17) with three runs and six RBIs in four games last week, including three against Bucknell.
*He slugged .824 with one home run and two doubles while reaching base at a .556 clip.
*The freshman right fielder went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs against the Bison on Monday.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Robbie Buecker, Army West Point, Sr., RHP, Allentown, N.J./Notre Dame
*Buecker allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits through 8.2 innings to lead Army West Point to a 5-3 victory over Lafayette on Friday. The senior right-hander struck out seven.
 
Ross Friedrick, Army West Point, Sr., 1B, Alpharetta, Ga./Cambridge
*Friedrick batted .400 (6-for-15), slugged 1.000 and reached base at a .471 clip to help Army West Point split four games last week, including two wins against Lafayette to clinch the Patriot League regular-season title. The senior first baseman drove in four runs and scored six.
 
Chris Baillargeon, Holy Cross, So., 1B, Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian
*Baillargeon batted .429 (6-for-14) with four RBIs on three doubles and a triple in four games last week. He slugged .786 and posted a .500 on-base percentage.   
 
Nick Burch, Navy, Sr., OF, Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown
*Burch batted .294 (5-for-17) with four runs and six RBIs to help Navy go 2-2, including taking two of three against Lehigh last week. The freshman outfielder doubled twice, with one triple and one home run in three games against the Mountain Hawks.
 
Reece Early, Navy, Sr., RHP, Reisterstown, Md./Gerstell Academy
*Early tossed 3.1 shutout innings of relief to earn a save in the Mids’ win over Lehigh on Saturday. The senior right-hander struck out a career-high six. He allowed just one unearned run through 14.1 innings, spanning five appearances in April.
