BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Boston University, Bucknell, Holy Cross and Navy each collected one of the four Patriot League men’s and women’s swimming and diving weekly awards when the Patriot League office announced the honors on Tuesday.
For the second time this season, Navy sophomore Ben Irwin was named the Patriot League Men’s Swimmer of the Week.
Bucknell freshman Clara Renner was selected as Patriot League Women’s Swimmer of the Week after earning three individual wins in the Bison’s quad meet.
Holy Cross freshman Griffin Casey collected Patriot League Men’s Diver of the Week honors for the second straight week after earning the Whit Griffith Award for the Male Diver of the Meet.
Boston University senior Sophia Souza earned Patriot League Women’s Diver of the Week recognition for the second time this season.
Honorable mentions went to Bucknell senior Justin DiSanto, Holy Cross junior Jack Greiner, Navy junior Mackenzie Kim, senior Blakeman Shaw and junior Lauren Walsh.
The Patriot League men’s and women’s swimmers and divers of the week were selected in a vote by League head coaches, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.
Patriot League Men’s Swimmer of the Week
Ben Irwin, Navy, So., Buford, Ga./Buford
*Irwin swam in three victories to help Navy earn wins over American (217-77), Bucknell (161-134) and Lafayette (222-73) on Saturday. The sophomore swam the opening leg on Navy’s winning 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 1:29.80. Individually, he won the 100-yard backstroke (50.09) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.94).
Patriot League Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Clara Renner, Bucknell, Fr., Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley
*Renner continued the outstanding start to her career by winning three events in Bucknell’s quad meet against American, Lafayette and Navy on Saturday. The freshman touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle, 1000-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly to give her eight wins in three meets to start the season.
Patriot League Men’s Diver of the Week
Griffin Casey, Holy Cross, Fr., Wilton, Conn./Wilton
*Casey led Holy Cross to their third consecutive Worcester City Championship and picked up the Whit Griffith Award for the Male Diver of the Meet. The freshman placed first in the one-meter dive (302.60) and on the three-meter board (312.85), to set meet records.
Patriot League Women’s Diver of the Week
Sophia Souza, Boston University, Sr., Coconut Creek, Fla./Calvary Christian Academy
*Souza posted season-high scores in the one-meter and three-meter diving events to help Boston University earn a dual win over UMass (155.5-142.5) on Saturday.
*After a runner-up finish in the three-meter dive with a score of 302.63, the senior was key in a late Terriers’ rally as she won the one-meter dive (298.13).
Honorable Mentions
Justin DiSanto, Bucknell, Sr., Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale
*DiSanto had a strong showing in Bucknell’s 2-1 weekend against American (231-66), Lafayette (238-62) and Navy (117-172) as the junior finished as the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle and tied for third in the 50-yard freestyle. He anchored the Bison’s 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay squads that finished in first and third place, respectively.
Jack Greiner, Holy Cross, Jr., New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan
*Greiner led Holy Cross to their third consecutive Worcester City Championship and earned the Justin Ferris Award, given to the Male Swimmer of the Meet, after establishing five new meet records.
*The junior smashed three individual records in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:46.47), the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.82), and the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.77), winning all three events.
*The New Canaan, Conn. native helped the Crusaders set meet marks in the 400-yard medley relay (3:30.76) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:10.13), both of which were first-place showings.
Mackenzie Kim, Navy, Jr., Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bard
*Kim helped Navy defeat American (217-77), Bucknell (161-134) and Lafayette (222-73) on Saturday as the junior swept both boards during the meet. The Diamond Bar, Calif. native placed first in the one-meter dive with a score of 299.00 and the three-meter after tallying 306.65 points.
Blakeman Shaw, Navy, Sr., Coral Gables, Fla./Westminster Academy
*Shaw guided Navy to victories over American (217-77), Bucknell (161-134), and Lafayette (222-73) on Saturday as the senior won the one-meter dive (331.50) and placed second in the three-meter board (306.65).
Lauren Walsh, Navy, Jr., Shelton, Conn./Trumball
*Walsh helped Navy defeat American (217-77), Bucknell (161-134), and Lafayette (222-73) on Saturday as the junior swam to three victories on the day. The Shelton, Conn. native was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.99) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.84) and swam on the Mids’ winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:43.73).
