Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship First Round Recap presented by PenFed Credit Union (3.5.24)

No. 7 Navy and No. 9 Holy Cross move on to Thursday’s quarterfinal round

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – No. 7 Navy defeated No. 10 Loyola Maryland, 64-48, and No. 9 Holy Cross downed No. 8 Army West Point, 84-68, in the First Round of the 2024 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship on Tuesday night.
 
Navy head coach Ed DeChellis collected his 400th career victory in the Mids win over the Greyhounds.
 
The Midshipmen advance to take on No. 2 Boston University at Case Gym in Boston, Mass. The Crusaders will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to meet top-seeded Colgate at Cotterell Court. Live coverage of both games will begin at 7 p.m. and be available on ESPN+.
 
No. 4 American hosts No. 5 Bucknell, and No. 3 Lafayette takes on arch-rival No. 6 Lehigh. Both games tip off at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior guard Joe Octave scored a game-high 28 points to lead No. 9 Holy Cross to an 84-68 victory over No. 8 Army West Point at Christl Arena to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2024 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Men’s Basketball Championship.
*Octave connected on 9-of-14 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, to lead a Crusaders squad that made 63.2 percent (12-of-19) of its attempts from 3-point range.
*Crusaders’ senior guard Bo Montgomery added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Caleb Kenney stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, five rebounds, three blocks, two assists and one steal.
*Patriot League Rookie of the Year Josh Scovens posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. He also dished out four assists to lead the Black Knights.
*Army West Point freshman guard Ryan Curry and sophomore guard Jaden Ellis scored 14 points apiece, while senior forward Charlie Peterson chipped in 10 points and three boards.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore guard Austin Benigni scored a game-high 24 points and sophomore forward Donovan Draper posted his 10th double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 7 Navy to a 64-48 victory over No. 10 Loyola Maryland in the first round of the Patriot League Championship.
*Benigni connected on 7-of-15 from the floor and went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line to help head coach Ed DeChellis earn his 400th career victory.
*Mids’ sophomore center Aidan Kehoe added nine points, 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. He also posted five assists, two steals and two blocks.
*Loyola Maryland sophomore guard Deon Perry scored a team-high 21 points in his return from injury. Perry had been out of the lineup since the Greyhounds’ regular-season loss against the Mids on Feb. 21.
*Senior forward Alonso Faure added seven points and four boards, while graduate student forward Golden Dike grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
