WASHINGTON – Graduate student Matt Rogers hit a fadeaway jumper in the lane with 3.2 seconds remaining in regulation to lift American to a 60-58 victory over Lafayette to sweep the season series and remain undefeated at Bender Arena in League play.
*Rogers, the Patriot League’s Preseason Player of the Year, scored the Eagles’ last six points through the final 1:22 of the game to hold off a Leopards’ team that led by as many as four points late in the game.
*He posted his second double-double of the season with a game-high 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 10 rebounds.
*Senior guard Elijah Stephens and sophomore forward Greg Jones scored 11 points apiece for the Eagles. Jones added six boards.
*American, the League’s best free-throw shooting team, connected on 9-of-11 from the charity stripe, including 8-of-9 in the second half.
*Lafayette sophomore forward Andrew Phillips led the Leopards with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, going 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
*Freshman guard Alex Chaikin posted 16 points and four rebounds, including a game-tying layup with 23 seconds left in the game.
*Senior center Justin Vander Baan and sophomore guard Mark Butler scored eight points apiece. Vander Baan added eight rebounds and five assists, while Butler grabbed six points.
*The Leopards outrebounded the Eagles and held an 11-0 advantage on second-chance points on seven offensive boards.
