Patriot League Announces Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week (3.24.25)

Boston University received four honors; Navy claimed one

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 15/17 Boston University collected four of the five Patriot League men’s lacrosse weekly awards when the League office announced the honors on Monday. Navy received one accolade.

Boston University freshman midfielder Andrew Pape collected Patriot League Offensive and Rookie of the Week honors after scoring four goals in the Terriers’ upset win over Army West Point. The Little Silver, N.J. native is the first student-athlete to garner both awards in the same week since Loyola Maryland’s Matthew Minicus on March 20, 2023.

Terriers’ sophomore long stick midfielder Donald Vernerin earned Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week following a three-caused turnover and five-ground ball performance.

For the third straight week and fourth time this season, Boston University’s Will Barnes was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week. The senior made a career-high 22 saves to earn the weekly honor for the seventh time in his career.

Navy junior Colin Shadowens won 16 of 20 faceoffs to receive Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week honors as the Mids defeated Holy Cross, 9-8.

Army West Point sophomore faceoff specialist, Bucknell freshman long stick midfielder Ollie Hau, Lafayette junior goalkeeper Joe Doherty and senior attack Riley Sullivan, Navy senior defender Jacob Darrow and junior attack Mac Haley received honorable mention for their performances last week.

Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player & Rookie of the Week
Andrew Pape, Boston University, Fr., M, Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Regional
*In his third career start, Pape scored a career-high four goals in Boston University’s 10-9 win at No. 2/3 Army West Point.
*The freshman put the Terriers in front 8-7 in the fourth quarter and had a hockey assist on the overtime winner for BU.
* The Little Silver, N.J. native is the first student-athlete to garner both awards in the same week since Loyola Maryland’s Matthew Minicus on March 20, 2023.

Donald Varnerin, Boston University, So., LSM, Westwood, Mass./Westwood
*Varnerin led Boston University with three caused turnovers and five ground balls as the Terriers knocked off No. 2/3 Army West Point 10-9 on Saturday.
*The sophomore long stick midfielder limited reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Evan Plunkett to zero points on a 0-for-12 shooting performance.

Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Faceoff Specialist of the Week
Colin Shadowens, Navy, Jr., FO, Severna Park, Md./Severna Park
*Shadowens dominated the ‘X’ in Navy’s 9-8 victory over Holy Cross as the junior won 16-of-20 draws.
*The Severna Park, Md. native scooped up a career-high eight ground balls after missing the previous four games.

Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Goalkeeper of the Week
Will Barnes, Boston University, Sr., GK, South Riding, Va./Paul VI
*Three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week Will Barnes delivered a career-high 22 saves, including an overtime stop that led to Boston University’s 10-9 over No. 2/3 Army West Point.
*The senior added one caused turnover and two ground balls, while assisting the Terriers in going 28-for-32 on clears.
*Among Patriot League rankings, Barnes is second in goals-against average (7.89), third in saves per game (12.50) and third in save percentage (.625).

*Simone finished 13-for-21 from the stripe in Army West Point’s 10-9 loss to Boston University on Saturday.
*The sophomore scored his third goal of the season in the second quarter and picked up three ground balls.

Ollie Hau, Bucknell, Fr., LSM, Oakton, Va./James Madison
*Hau paced Bucknell with three caused turnovers and four ground balls in Saturday’s 11-10 win over Lehigh.
*The freshman’s takeaway with five seconds remaining in the fourth quarter sealed the second straight League win for the Bison.

Benjamin DiBattista, Lafayette, Fr., MF, Westwood, Mass./Belmont Hill
*DiBattista tallied his second consecutive hat trick and third of the season in Lafayette’s first-ever victory over Loyola Maryland on Saturday. The freshman scored twice in the second half to lift the Leopards to an 11-10 win.

Joe Doherty, Lafayette, Jr., GK, Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep
*Doherty recorded a season-high 16 saves and one ground ball in the Leopards’ first-ever victory over Loyola Maryland on Saturday. The junior made a stop with 3:05 remaining to secure the 11-10 win for Lafayette.
*The Malvern, Pa. native is fifth in the Patriot League in goals-against average (10.05), fifth in saves per game (11.33) and sixth in save percentage (.534).

Riley Sullivan, Lafayette, Sr., A, Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic
*Sullivan led the Leopards with five points on one goal and four assists as Lafayette defeated Loyola Maryland 11-10 on Saturday for the first time in program history.
*The senior’s goal at the 6:49 mark in the fourth quarter was the game-winner, and he added two ground balls.
*The Roswell, Ga. native leads the Patriot League in assists per game (3.88) and points per game (6.63), while ranking first and second nationally in each category.

Jacob Darrow, Navy, Sr., D, Millersville, Md./Severn School
*Darrow recorded four caused turnovers and eight ground balls, as Navy’s defense limited Le Moyne (8-5) and Holy Cross (9-8) to single-digit goals in a 2-0 week. The Dolphins’ five goals were the fewest scored by an opponent since 2023 and the senior held Holy Cross’ Owen Tunney without a point on Saturday.

Mac Haley, Navy, Jr., A, Shady Side, Md./St Johns College (HS)
*Haley totaled eight points on five goals and three assists in a 2-0 week for Navy, which featured victories over Le Moyne (8-5) and Holy Cross (9-8).
*Trailing the Crusaders 5-4 at halftime, the junior recorded two goals and two assists in the second half before netting the game-winner with 1:33 remaining in overtime.
*On Tuesday, Haley tallied two goals and one assist in the Mids’ win over the Dolphins.
