Navy (15-3-2) extended the nation's longest win streak to 14 in a row with a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross to claim the 2013 Patriot League Men's Soccer Championship at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Md. The Mids claimed their first League crown and moved on to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988. Navy's Guy Skord was named Patriot League Tournament MVP.
Navy opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Geoff Fries scored his first goal of the season after being sprung on a breakaway after a highlight-reel bicycle-kick pass at midfield from Patrick Sopko. Fries took the pass, went in on Holy Cross keeper Kevin Wright and beat him to the lower right corner to put Navy up 1-0.
That score held up until halftime, but it didn't take long for the Mids to tack on an insurance tally. Joseph Greenspan, the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, used his 6-foot-6 frame to head in Martin Sanchez's corner kick two minutes into the second half. For Greenspan, it's his seventh goal of the season.
Navy's 15th win tied a program record, and is the most for a League school since 2009, when Bucknell finished 17-6-0.
