2011-12 Patriot League Presidents' Cup Final Standings
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The 2011-12 Patriot League campaign marked a banner year for the United States Naval Academy, and the Mids capped their success by claiming the overall Presidents' Cup trophy for the first time in school history.
Navy racked up 121.75 points to win the overall Patriot League Presidents' Cup title, pulling away from second-place Lehigh (109.75) and third-place Bucknell (108.5) by winning four League titles in the spring season. Navy claimed nine Patriot League championships in 2011-12, tying for the fourth-best mark in League history and finishing with the most titles for any school since the 1996-97 season. Navy becomes just the third program to win the Presidents' Cup, joining 17-time winner Bucknell and four-time champion Army. The Bison had won the past six overall Presidents' Cup trophies, while Navy had finished second for five straight years. Lehigh's second-place finish marks its best position since 2001.
Coming in fourth place in the overall standings was Army (98.75), who was followed in order by Colgate (83), Lafayette (67.75), American (61.25) and Holy Cross (54.5).
The Mids recorded another first by winning the women's Presidents' Cup crown. Navy won women's championships in cross country, swimming and diving, basketball, lacrosse and outdoor track and field and accumulated 63.75 points to claim the title for the first time. Bucknell, which had won 14 consecutive women's titles and 17 in the past 19 seasons, finished second with 54.25 points. The Bison were followed in the standings by Lehigh (51.5), Colgate (49), Army (47.75), Lafayette (35), American (33) and Holy Cross (32.75).
Navy nearly pulled off the sweep, but Lehigh was able to edge the Mids by .25 points in the final men's standings to claim the male Patriot League Presidents' Cup for the fourth time in school history and first since 2006. The pair racked up seven of the 11 men's titles, with Lehigh winning it all in football, basketball and lacrosse and Navy claiming the crowns in cross country, swimming and diving, tennis and golf. Lehigh (58.25) narrowly outpointed Navy (58) in the closest final men's standings with the exception of first-place ties in 1999 and 2004. Bucknell, which had won the last two men's trophies, finished third with 54.25 points. Army followed in fourth place with 51 points, ahead of Colgate (34), Lafayette (32.75), American (28.25) and Holy Cross (21.75).
Navy's nine Patriot League titles were the most in history for any school other than Army. The Black Knights won 12 in 1993-94, 11 in 1994-95, 10 in 1996-97 and nine in 1991-92. Lehigh and Bucknell each followed the Mids with four Patriot League titles apiece. The Mountain Hawks won it all in softball in addition to their three men's titles, while Bucknell claimed Patriot League championships in men and women's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field and rowing. Army won Patriot League titles in women's soccer, women's tennis and baseball, while American (volleyball), Colgate (men's soccer) and Lafayette (field hockey) each picked up one crown in 2011-12.
The Patriot League Presidents' Cup is awarded to the member institution with the highest cumulative sports point total for their Patriot League standings in sponsored men and women's sports. Points are awarded based upon a combination of an institution's regular-season and tournament finishes in each sport. If there is no Patriot League Championship tournament (football), points are awarded based upon final regular-season standings. If there is no regular season competition and the champion is determined by a Patriot League Championship (cross country, golf, rowing, swimming and diving, track and field), points are awarded based upon final tournament standings. If all teams compete in the Patriot League Championship and there is a regular-season competition (basketball, tennis), points are awarded based on an average of final regular-season standings and Championship finish. If all teams do not participate in the Patriot League Championship and there is a regular-season competition (baseball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, volleyball), points are awarded based upon an average of final regular-season standings and Championship finish. For those teams not participating in the Championship, the final regular-season standing will be used.
Army won the overall Patriot League Presidents' Cup in 1994, 1995, 1997 and 2005, with Bucknell claiming the trophy in every other season until Navy broke through this year.
