BOSTON, Mass. – The Boston University Terriers were crowned the 2018 Patriot League Softball champions on Saturday for the third time in the last five years after defeating Lehigh with an 8-0 run-rule decision, at Boston University’s softball field in Boston, Mass.
The Terriers received the League’s automatic berth to the NCAA Softball Tournament and will learn their opponent during the selection show on Sunday, May 13 at 10 p.m. on ESPN2.
The score was stuck at 0-0 until the bottom of the third when Boston University put up two runs. Brittany Younan scored on Emma Wong’s double to center field before Wong crossed home plate on Alex Heinen’s single to left field.
The Terriers kept the scoring going in the bottom of the fourth as they tacked on six more runs to secure the 8-0 win. Jilee Schanda put one run up as she was pushed home on Emily Morrow’s triple to right field. Morrow then reached home plate on Marina Sylvestri’s sacrifice bunt. Kailtin Sahlinger made the score 5-0 as she nabbed her lone run of the game when Wong reached first on a fielder’s choice. Tournament MVP Madi Killebrew then cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right center scoring Wong, Younan and Sylvestri.
Lehigh’s bats were quiet as they only earned one hit from Carolyn Wright. The Mountain Hawks' sophomore Parker Boyd took the loss in the circle as she gave up eight hits and eight runs for a 19-13 record to end the season.
Terriers’ freshman hurler Ali DuBois took the win (28-7) in her five-inning performance. DuBois only gave up one hit while earning five strikeouts. Kilebrew ended the game with three RBIs and one hit while Younan nabbed two hits and two runs. Wong contributed two RBIs, two runs and one hit in three at-bats. Killebrew broke the League’s tournament record in RBIs with ten total as she topped Lehigh’s Vicky Lattanzio’s nine from last season.
