Patriot League Announces Baseball Players of the Week (4.23.19)

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Navy senior right-handed pitcher Noah Song captured his record-breaking ninth career Patriot League Pitcher of the Week and Lehigh junior first baseman Tony Gallo and freshman right-handed pitcher Mason Black received player and rookie of the week, respectively when Patriot League Baseball Weekly Awards were announced on Tuesday.
 
Song picked up his fifth Patriot League Pitcher of the Week of the campaign and ninth of his career to break Army West Point’s Nick Hill (2004-07) record for the most career pitcher of the week honors. Song earned his seventh win of the season by tossing a complete-game shutout against Army West Point. He allowed one hit and struck out eight in 7.0 innings.  
 
Lehigh junior first baseman Tony Gallo claimed his first Patriot League Player of the Week this season by batting .688 (11-for-16) with four runs,  eight RBIs, two home runs and a double to help Lehigh go 4-0 last week. He had a pair of walk-off hits during Lehigh’s doubleheader against the Bison on Saturday, hitting a walk-off two-run home run in game one and a walk-off two-run single in game two.
 
Lehigh freshman right-handed pitcher Mason Black was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the first time after earning a victory over Lafayette on Wednesday by tossing 5.2 shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out four.
 
Holy Cross junior centerfielder Austin Masel and sophomore RHP Liam Dvorak along with Army West Point sophomore first baseman Anthony Giachin and senior RHP Sam Messina were selected as weekly honorable mentions.

ARMY WEST POINT’S JACOB HURTUBISE CLOSING IN ON PATRIOT LEAGUE RECORD
Army West Point junior centerfielder Jacob Hurtubise stole his 92nd career base in the fifth inning of game two against Navy on Saturday. Hurtubise passed Fordham’s Shawn Harris, who stole 91 bases from 1992-94, to move into second place in Patriot League history. The Black Knights’ centerfielder is seven shy of Bucknell’s Ian Joseph, who recorded 99 stolen bases between 1998 and 2001. He is fifth in NCAA DI with 0.80 stolen bases per game. Army West Point has 12 regular-season games left this season.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL UPCOMING GAMES (How to Watch)
Bucknell travels to Mount St. Mary’s for a 3:30 p.m. game on Tuesday afternoon, before Lafayette meets Delaware in the Championship Game of the Liberty Bell Classic at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. First pitch between the Leopards and Blue Hens is scheduled for 7 p.m.  All six Patriot League squads will be in action on Wednesday with three games on the Patriot League Network (PLN) and one on BTN2go. League play resumes with a trio of doubleheaders on Saturday. Lafayette travels to Bucknell, Lehigh heads to Navy and Army West Point takes on Holy Cross. The Black Knights and Crusaders will play two more on Sunday, as Lehigh will play two at Bucknell and Lafayette travels south to play two against Navy. PATRIOT LEAGUE STUDENT-ATHLETES AMONG NCAA DI LEADERS
*Navy senior RHP Noah Song leads NCAA DI in strikeouts (118), strikeouts per nine innings (16.09), wins (8), complete games (5) and is 10th in the nation in ERA (1.36).  
*Holy Cross sophomore RHP Liam Dvorak and Army West Point senior LHP Tyler Giovinco are tied for 36th in NCAA DI with six wins.
*Army West Point sophomore 1B Anthony Giachin is 29th in NCAA DI with 15 doubles this season.
*Navy senior catcher Christian Hodge is 46th in the nation with 10 home runs and 51st with 42 RBIs.
*Navy junior outfielder Evan Lowery leads NCAA DI with 10 sacrifice flies this season while Holy Cross junior catcher Riley Livingston is second in the nation with 12 sacrifice bunts.
*Army West Point junior outfielder Jacob Hurtubise is fifth in the nation averaging 0.80 stolen bases per game and 47th with 1.15 runs per game. The Black Knights’ leadoff hitter is also 27th with a .497 on-base percentage.

PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tony Gallo, Lehigh, Jr., 1B, Newtown Square, Pa./Devon Prep
*Gallo batted .688 (11-for-16) while scoring four runs and driving in eight with two home runs and a double to help Lehigh go 4-0 last week with a win over Lafayette and a three-game sweep over Bucknell.
*He slugged 1.125 and reached base at a .750 clip while hitting in each of the Mountain Hawks’ four games, including a 5-for-5 performance in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader with the Bison. He had nine consecutive hits during the Bucknell series.
*Gallo drove in the game-winning runs in both of Lehigh’s Saturday games against Bucknell with a walk-off two-run home run in game one (5-3) and a walk-off two-run single in game two (7-6).
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

*Song tossed a complete-game shutout, while allowing one hit, striking out eight and walking two over 7.0 innings in a 3-0 win over Army West Point in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
*The performance was Song’s first complete-game shutout of the season.
*After allowing a bunt single to open the game, Song did not allow a hit to Army West Point for the rest of the game.  
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Mason Black, Lehigh, Fr., RHP, Archbald, Pa./Valley View
*Black made two appearances, including a start against Lafayette, scattering eight hits and allowing one run over 7.0 innings.
*The freshman right-hander pitched 5.2 shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out four, to earn the win in a 12-1 victory over the Leopards.
*Black pitched 1.1 innings of relief, allowing one run, in the Mountain Hawks 6-4 win over Bucknell.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS

*Dvorak pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits while matching his career-high with 10 strikeouts to earn his sixth win of the year in a 5-1 decision over Lafayette on Monday.  
 
Anthony Giachin, Army West Point, So., 1B, Livingston, N.J./Newark Academy
*Giachin batted .400 (6-for-15) with four runs and five RBIs to go 3-1 last week, including taking two of three games from Navy. He drove in three runs and hit a home run in the Black Knights’ 11-3 win in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Navy.  
 
Austin Masel, Holy Cross, Jr., CF, Stoneham, Mass./Belmont Hill
*Masel batted .444 (8-for-18) with three runs, four RBIs and two home runs during the Crusaders’ 2-2 week. He slugged .889 and had a 4-for-4 game against Lafayette in a 10-5 win in the second game of its doubleheader on Sunday.
 
Sam Messina, Army West Point, Sr., RHP, Phoenix, Ariz./Chaparral
*Messina earned his fifth win of the season by allowing two runs, neither earned, on three hits over 5.2 innings in an 11-3 win over Navy. He struck out six and walked none.
