CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Army West Point Black Knights and the Boston University Terriers notched two major award recipients each as the All-Patriot League teams and major awards were announced on Friday afternoon by the League office.
Army sophomore Ana Joyner was named the player of the year while her coach, Paul Peck earned coach of the year recognition as they both earned these accolades last year. Terrier freshman Shelly Yaloz received rookie of the year honors, and she paired with sophomore Emily Kim to earn doubles player of the year.
Patriot League Women’s Tennis Player of the Year
Ana Joyner, Army West Point, So.
* Joyner finished this season with an 18-11 overall record and a 6-1 record in Patriot League play.
* The sophomore played at No. 1 doubles the entire season for a 14-11 overall record.
* She also played at No. 1 singles all season, and has a win over the number one player from each team in the Patriot League except Bucknell (due to not playing them).
Patriot League Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Year
Shelly Yaloz, Boston University, Fr.
* Yaloz earned a duals match record of 13-5 to go with a 5-1 record in Patriot League play.
* The three-time player of the week also nabbed wins over Yale, UCONN, Harvard and Dartmouth in non-conference play.
Patriot League Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Year
Shelly Yaloz, Fr./Emily Kim, Boston University
* Yaloz and Kim, a first-team and second-team All-Patriot League team member, respectively, nabbed the Doubles Team of the Year after recording a 13-5 dual match record and an 8-0 record in League play.
* In the Patriot League Women’s Tennis Tournament, the duo earned wins over Lafayette (6-0), Bucknell (6-2) and Army (6-0).
Patriot League Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year
Paul Peck, Army West Point
* Peck coached the Black Knights to a 22-7 overall record and a 5-2 mark in Patriot League action.
* Peck also led the team to their second consecutive Patriot League Women’s Tennis title with a 4-3 win over Boston University.
* He will take the Black Knights to Seattle, Wash. to compete in the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship against the Washington Huskies in the first round.
Six out of nine League teams are represented on the 12-member All-League teams. Boston University garnered four student-athletes on the two teams, followed by Army West Point, which had three. Bucknell and Navy placed two each on the all-League squads, and Lehigh and Loyola Maryland rounded out the teams with one student-athlete apiece.
