Presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation, the winner of the Golden Spikes Award will be announced on Thursday, June 13, at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, during "Baseball Tonight" on ESPN2 prior to the GEICO Summer Series MLB game between the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals.
Joining Song as finalists for the award is Vanderbilt's JJ Bleday, Oregon State's Adley Rutschman and the reigning Golden Spikes Award winner, Andrew Vaughn of California. Song is the lone senior finalist for the award and is the first collegiate senior finalist for the Golden Spikes Award since 2010 when Central Florida's Chris Duffy was named a finalist for the award during his senior campaign.
Along with being the lone senior on the list, Song is the only pitcher among the four finalists and he is looking to become the first pitcher to win the award since 2017 when pitcher and first baseman Brendan McKay of Louisville won the award. The last individual to win the award as a pitcher only was in 2011 when UCLA's Trevor Bauer won the award.
During the 2019 season, Song posted a 1.44 ERA to rank sixth in the country. Song also leads the NCAA with 161 strikeouts this year and has a nation-leading 11 wins, along with the top strikeout per nine inning mark at 15.41. The strikeout per nine mark Song recorded this season is the best in Division I since 2009 when Stephen Strasburg of San Diego State posted a mark of 16.1. Song's 15.41 strikeout per nine inning mark this season is also tied for sixth all-time in NCAA Division I history.
In 14 starts this season, Song has allowed the opposition to hit just .171 at the plate. The native of Claremont, Calif., also ranks second in the country in complete games (6), seventh in hits allowed per nine innings (5.27) and 13th in WHIP (0.91).
Song was named the 2019 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year and is a First-Team All-Patriot League selection for the second-straight season. In his four seasons, he has broken the Patriot League record for most league Pitcher of the Week honors in a career after earning the award 10 times in his time at Navy. The senior has also been selected as the National Player of the Week on five different occasions in 2019 and seven times in his career.
In his four years at Navy, Song has rewritten the program record books. This season, he broke the career record for wins (32), strikeouts (428), innings pitched (334-1/3) and tied for the most shutouts in school history with nine. All four records were previously set back in 1961 by Chuck Davis. Along with breaking nearly six-decade-old career records, Song broke the single-season record for strikeouts, which Davis set back in 1960, with 161 this season. Song has also moved into the top 15 for career ERA at 2.37, which is the lowest ERA in program history in the last 30 years. He is also second in strikeouts per nine innings in his career at 11.52.
Historically, Golden Spikes Award winners have gone on to have tremendous success in Major League Baseball. Of the 41 previous winners, five have earned Rookie of the Year honors, two have won the Cy Young, three were named MVP and 10 have won a World Series championship as a player or manager, combining for a total of 16 championships. In addition, 18 previous winners have made one or more All-Star Game appearances as a player or manager, combining for 56 total selections.
The 2019 winner will look to join a group of recent winners that include Vaughn (2018), McKay (2017), Kyle Lewis (2016), Andrew Benintendi (2015), A.J. Reed (2014), Kris Bryant (2013), Mike Zunino (2012), Trevor Bauer (2011), Bryce Harper (2010), Stephen Strasburg (2009), Buster Posey (2008) and David Price (2007).
The winner of the 2019 Golden Spikes Award will be announced on Thursday, June 13 at TD Ameritrade Park, home of the College World Series, in Omaha, Neb., where all four finalists have been invited to attend the announcement on ESPN2.
