BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army West Point sophomore Georgia Jones and Navy junior Brett Brady were selected as the 2021 Patriot League Women’s and Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, respectively, when the League office announced honors on Monday.
Jones and Brady were also first-time selections to the seven-member men’s and women’s Academic All-Patriot League squads.
Six men’s and women’s cross country student-athletes earned Academic All-Patriot League honors for the second time, including Army West Point senior Marshall Beatty (philosophy, 3.659 GPA) the back-to-back League men’s individual champion and defending scholar-athlete of the year. Lafayette junior Robert Oehrlein (mechanical engineering, 3.89 GPA) is a two-time All-League and two-time Academic All-League selection, while Lehigh graduate student Seth Slavin (mechanical engineering, 4.0 graduate, 3.96 undergraduate GPA) was an academic All-League honoree in 2019.
Boston University junior Andrea Claeson (public relations, 3.81 GPA), the reigning women’s cross country scholar-athlete of the year is also a two-time All-League selection after finishing third at this season’s championship. Colgate senior Sophia Manners (history, 3.87 GPA) earned academic All-League honors for the second consecutive season, while Boston University graduate student Corinne Batsu (applied business analytics, 3.61 GPA) earned academic team honors after making the squad in 2019.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
2021 Patriot League Cross Country Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Brett Brady, Navy, Jr., Phoenix, Ariz./Butler Area (Pa.)
*Brady was a First Team All-Patriot League honoree after finishing third overall at the 2021 Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Championship with an 8K time of 25:13.7 to help Navy earn the team title.
*The junior aerospace engineering major carries a 3.92 cumulative GPA and is a three-time United States Naval Academy Commandant’s List honoree.
*This season, Brady placed first at the Army-Navy Star Meet and was recognized as the Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week after finishing 26th of 357 runners at the Paul Short Run.
*Brady interned with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center during the summer of 2021.
2021 Patriot League Cross Country Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Georgia Jones, Army West Point, So., Mont Vernon, N.H./Souhegan
*Jones was named the 2021 Patriot League Women’s Cross Country Outstanding Runner of the Meet, after winning the individual title with a 6K time of 21:03.9.
*The sophomore international affairs major has a 3.952 cumulative GPA and is in the top 10-percent of her class at West Point.
*The defending Patriot League Rookie of the Year is a two-time Patriot League Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week after earning breaking the Army West Point 5K record during the fall season.
*Jones also tutors within West Point’s Center for Enhanced Performance (CEP) and is College Reading & Learning (CRLA) certified in addition to providing tutoring in physics.
Eleven All-League Honorees Make Academic Squads
Six of the seven members of the Women’s Cross Country Academic All-Patriot League squad earned All-League honors following the 2021 championship, highlighted by Jones. Batsu, Claeson and Holy Cross junior Eve Feuerbach (interdisciplinary studies, 3.63 GPA) and Navy junior Elizabeth Sullivan (chemistry, 3.91 GPA) were all First-Team All-Patriot League finishers. Navy senior Maddie Warrender (honors English, 3.97 GPA) was a second-team All-League selection.
On the men’s side, five of the seven academic team recipients made the All-League team following the 2021 championships. Beatty and Brady highlight the squad, along with fellow first-team honorees Navy seniors John Bowers (honors ocean engineering, 3.98 GPA) and Ashwin Briggs (operations research, 3.82 GPA). Oehrlein made the second team following the championship.
Eight Student-Athletes Make Academic Squad for the First Time
Brady and Jones, the men’s and women’s scholar-athlete of the year recipients highlight a list of eight student-athletes who made their first Academic All-Patriot League Cross Country Team in 2021. On the men’s side, Loyola Maryland senior Nathan Galloway (honors English and global studies, 3.908 GPA) was joined by Bowers and Briggs as first-time cross country selections. On the women’s side, Feuerbach, Sullivan and Warrender joined Jones as first-time selections.
Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
