Patriot League Announces Tennis Players of the Week (2.24.21)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Navy senior Miranda Deng earned the Patriot League Female Tennis Player of the Week, while teammate senior Andrew Ton was named the men’s tennis player of the week when the League office announced the awards on Wednesday.
 
Army West Point’s junior Diego Huttenpain and senior Ana Joyner both were placed on the honorable mention list.
  
Men’s Player of the Week
Andrew Ton, Navy, Sr., Milpitas, Calif.
* Ton helped Navy to a 6-1 victory over Richmond on Feb. 20 by recording wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles.
* In doubles, the senior teamed with Sasha Panyan for a 6-3 victory over Matt Fernandez and Josh Keitelman.
* In singles action, he won a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) decision over Fernandez. Ton trailed, 5-2, and 6-3 in the tiebreaker.
 
Women’s Player of the Week
Miranda Deng, Navy, Sr., North Potomac, Md./Wootton
* Deng finished the opening weekend with a record of 2-0 after she picked up a singles win and a doubles win against in the team’s 5-2 victory over George Washington.
* The senior partnered with Jillian Taggart at No. 1 doubles to win a 6-0 decision over GW’s Alexis Nelson and Stella Wiesemann.
* Deng also earned a straight-set win at No. 4 singles against Luciana Kunkel at Deng winning 6-0, 6-2.
* Navy’s win on Saturday marked the first time in program history that it defeated George Washington in back-to-back matches.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Diego Huttenpain, Army West Point, Jr., Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter
* Huttepain opened the year with a victory in the No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2, against Sacred Heart on Saturday.
 
Ana Joyner, Army West Point, Sr., Las Cruces, N.M./Arrowhead Park Early College
* In Army’s 7-0 victory over UCONN on Saturday, Joyner grabbed a straight-set win in No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-3).
